The mysterious Jacob has a unique set of abilities. The ability to see the future, heal the living, and talk to dead people.
1)Jacob can see the future because he knew that Locke would be special so he sent Richard Alpert to test him.(S4)
2)Jacob can heal the living because he helped Locke to walk and after he was shot and left for dead.(S1,S3)
3)Jacob can talk to dead people because he sent the ghosts of Christian, and Yemi to convince the Locke to move the island and for Eko to press the Swan button instead of Locke. (S2,S4)
So who do we know that can do all these things?
A) Locke foresees the smoke monster as a child in his drawing.(S4)
B) Jack heals Sara's broken back by promising to "fix" her.(S2)
C) Hurley sees and talks with Charlie, and he is able to see Jacob's cabin when others can't.(S4) Also, Hurley's Mom has the gift, too(S5).
Therefore, JACK, LOCKE, AND HURLEY ARE THE NEXT JACOB.
Jacob said to Locke, "Help Me" because he wants someone else to takeover(S4). Jacob let Jack get appendicitis to prevent him from leaving the island(S4). Jacob showed Hurley the cabin because he needed him(S4).
There is even more Proof that dead people's spirits can be encouraged to do Jacob's bidding.
Christian tells Michael, "You can go now" and then lets him die.(S4)
Boone tells Locke to "Clean up your own mess."(S3)
Ana-Lucia tells Eko to stop building a church and help John.(S2)
Christian leads Jack to the caves and fresh water.(S1)
Harper tells Juliet to stop the Tempest shutdown.(S4)
Horace tells Locke where to look for the cabin.(S4)
Libby guides Michael in the hospital, and on the freighter.(S4)
There is also proof that Jacob wants Jack and Hurley to come back.
Charlie tells Hurley that they need him to go back.(S4)
Christian sitting and saying "Jack?" in Jack's waiting room.(S4)
Eko plays chess with Hurley and probably tells him to go back.(S4)
Claire tells Kate, "Don't you dare bring him back", meaning Aaron(S4)
Jacob uses Locke to get Jack and Hurley back to the island, first by trying to tell them that the left-behinders were going to die if they didn't return and then by letting Locke die and guilting Jack.
So if Locke is dead, how can he be a part of the next Jacob? Because when he gets back to the island, Jacob and the island will revive him. That's why Ben says, "We're gonna have to bring him, too."
So why do Jack, Locke, and Hurley have to become the next Jacob? Because they left the island, the island itself is in danger. Jacob will no longer be able to protect it and the Valenzetti Equation will continue the countdown to the end of humanity (like the swan station countdown to destruction).
So to sum up, Jack, Locke, and Hurley will be the next Jacob, the savior of humanity by changing an element of the Valenzetti equation through the use of foresight, healing, and spirit persuasion.
