Now that we are through the threshold of LOST season 5, I for one am inspired to theorize once again. It has been a long time since I have sat and thought about the mysteries of LOST and tried to make sense of any of it. This is by no means a theory to everything as I believe we simply do not know enough about the mythology to be able to accurately guess as to what it all means. Not yet anyway.
As many of us guessed the island has moved in space-time. However it isn't just to one destination but is flashing all throughout the islands history in the space-time continuum. Originally I believe this was a consequence of turning the wheel, now I'm not so sure that is the case. I believe that benjamin Linus wasn't the first person to turn the wheel and while we haven't seen evidence to prove this, I believe it is implied that Charles Widmore has and in turn has been banished from the island and like Benjamin has been trying to get back ever since. I also believe that at some point after getting into the wheel chamber the Dharma Initiative used polar bears to turn the wheel to test its effects on the island, I believe this is implied by Charlotte finding the polar bear remains in the Tunisian desert (the same desert that Benjamin ended up after moving the island)
The island is unstuck in the space-time continuum not because Benjamin Linus turned the wheel but because the 06 left. I believe like John Locke that everyone crashed there for a reason and that the members of the O6 have "very important work" to do and were never supposed to be able to leave the island because their fate is predestined, But as we learned in premiere "Because you left" Desmond is uniquely special as the "rules of time-travel" don't apply to him. I believe that normal people; because they are subject to the basic rules of time-travel can't change the past or the future but Desmond because these set of rules don't apply can. That in my opinion is the sole reason they were able to leave the island; is because they were with Desmond when they left and he can alter predestined fate for better or for worse. In this case worse.
The island moving in space-time and the effects of the O6 leaving caused the island to become untethered in time, and like the analogy Faraday gave Sawyer comparing the island to phonograph skipping; bouncing around a written predestined series of events until it finds a groove to settle back into somewhere in the track list of time. The island need the O6 to find this groove.
I also believe that those with power have a hard time passing the torch when the time has come, and that the purpose of Richard Alpert is to oversee this transition of power. In the season 4 episode "Cabin Fever" Ben tells Hurley that, "he didn't give the order to wipe out the Dharma Initiative their leader did" To which Hurley replies, "I thought you were their leader" Ben ominously states, "Not always" The leader at that time was Charles Widmore and he gave the order to purge the Dharma Initiative and after it's members were tossed in a holocaust like death pit, in order to protect the island from the D.I. reconstituting, Charles was forced to move it and like Ben was banished from ever returning. Having to move the island is like taking a "F" on the final exam. In other words it means You've failed service at being able to protect the island, and thus failed Jacob and now you must leave.
Ben's time had now come and he faithfully served the island and Jacob for sometime until Jacob had chosen another John Locke, and brought 815 to the island just as he had done with Ben in the 70's. The day Oceanic flight 815 came to the island was the day Ben knew his time was nearing an end and he had done everything from that time until now to keep himself in power until he eventually realized his efforts were fruitless, and his time was over. Ben accepts his fate and passes the torch to John, something Charles had a difficult time doing with Ben. Maybe Ben and Richard conned Charles into turning the wheel without his knowing its effects and thus treats Benjamin as usurper the his rightful throne. I believe John Locke was to Ben as Ben was to Charles. Richard and Abaddon serve as Panchen Lamas to the leaders of the island and ultimately serve a higher authority and purpose. I believe those two know the future and just what it takes to save the island and are manipulating t! he fates of others to achieve this rightful outcome.
I believe that when John Locke and the rest of those who were never supposed to leave return to the island John Locke will serve in a position similar to Richard as a guide and chancellor to the rightful leader of the island: Jack Shepard. Shepard will lead his flock into a golden age of island hierarchy. Or is it monarchy? Aaron Shepard? Only "time" will tell.
Thank you for taking to the time to read my thoughts and observations, let me know what you think by leaving comments in the section below. I hope these theories make as much sense to you as they do to me.
