Back at Comic Con 2006, Darlton commented on the theme of parent issues by saying that this theme will ultimately be consequential to the show.
For almost every character on LOST, there seems to be at least one parent that has greatly effected their child's life. Christian Shephard with Jack and Claire, Sam Austin, David Reyes, Anthony Cooper, Mr. Paik effecting both Sun and consequentially Jin, Charles Widmore with Desmond...the list goes on.
What if all our Lostie's parents at one point in time lived on the island and left for some reason and the island tried to make them come back but they refused. In turn, the island instead focused on their children, their loved ones as a form of payback and it was the childrens destiny to come to the island. The parent actions catalyzed the life of their children. Season 5's tag-line is Destiny Calls.
Widmore want to go back. Anthony Cooper just happened to appear on the island quite easily. Sam Austin was in the military and there just happened to be a military knife (The Other 48 Days with Goodwin and Ana Lucia cutting up the mango before their fight). Christian is now a walking spirit of sorts that is connected to Jacob. Mr. Paik seems too connected to not be involved some way.
