I started thinking of this after reading Nicoles theory on SpoilerTv's forum so shouts to her.
After thinking about the CC Orchid video and how we seemingly hear Dan in the background with Dr. Marvin Candle aka Pierre Cheng aka The super duper smart professor of theoretical astro-physics from Ann Arbor, Michigan (GO BLUE!!!!!) AKA the Dharma Orientation Video Poster child; it is safe to say that Faraday is the reason Chang knows about the purge.
First, we have to establish when, how, and through what mechanism Daniel Faraday could have retained knowledge of the purge if he did indeed warn Cheng in the events shortly before the Dharma Video. To explain this I have 4 basic sub theories.
*1: I believe that faraday has time travelled back to the same time and place as the other island bound losties (when Dharma was on the come up, I think the consensus is mid/late 70s or so).
If so, he could have retained knowledge of the purge from his notebook. We do not know and cannot accurately speculate, how he has this information in his book. We do know that he knew about the Orchid. My sub theory for this is that after Desmond contacted him in his past, he now was able to tweak and perfect his time-space experiments and apparatus. [The S**T Oxford frowns upon, the high end scientific blow your face off time travel S**T]. Now, I hate explaining this time stuff but here goes my attempts to make it simple and understandable. It appears Desmond retains his future consciousness when he travels to the past but not the memories he would have up until that point in the future. For example, Desmond remembers being on the freighter with Sayid and the rest, but does not know of his relationship with Sayid or that they have been on island associates. Not too important in retrospect for this theory but neccessary to solidify the notion that Desmond could have a! ccurately conveyed information about the Island, obviously the freighter, and not to be forgotten Penelope wildmore, whos father would ultimately be the reason Dan arrives on the Island in 2004 on the freightor. Hell, Desmond could have told Farraday that he arrived on the freighter off camera. There are one or two scenes where we pick up with desmond and Faraday mid discussion in The Constant. To conclude, Faraday knows information about the losties and the general situation with the island and freighter in the future.
*2: Here is where it gets tricky. Keamy had access to the information about the secondary protocol, it required his key and the captains key. If it was under lock and key and so secure, do we really think that Faraday would have had access to the secondary protocol and known about the Orchid? I dont think so but cannot rule it out that he somehow had access to that similar source of information. This theory works, but in the spirit of Lost, I am very hesitant to fully accept this. The option remains however, that Dan did not visit the island prefreighter, but through his scientific and academic channels, had access to almost "mythological" Dharma evidence and somehow hooked up with wildmore or Abbadon posing as a rogue scientist to satisfy his own goals of reaching the island. This goal is to reach the island and to learn more about the time-space anomolies that could have caused Des to time travel. This would be a thrill and surely obsessive desire of a bright mind su! ch as faraday to see for himself the powers and potential of the island (In a pure scientific awe type of potential. I dont think Dan has any evil intentions then just learning more about the uniqe properties and benefits to mankind). However, again its hard to believe this most importantly because of the next theory.
*3.) If Daniel farriday arrives at the island because of the information gave him back in the past he would remember Desmond but doesn't. My theory is that either, since Desmond contacted him in the past, only his past consciousness would remember this, his present thoughts and memories do not remember meeting desmond, but this information is locked somewhere deep in his brain. We use what 15% of our brains or something, the cosciousness from different times could be in that other percentage.[Hence, Desmond not knowing Sayid, calling penny, then *Click* those memories of your present consciousness and time up until that point are unlocked. Not to mention the infamous "Cantt...get ...back" Death scene).
However, memory loss can be associated with repeated electromagnetic exposure, ie, time traveling and crazy experiments (also note the convo with Des and Dan about wearing the vest, and Des asks "Well what about your head?"!!) Perhaps Dan knows about more than just seeing desmond in his past, like being a part of Dharma initially? This would explain the memory loss from all the time travel that had in Oxford back in the day, then in Dharma on the Island, then back off the island when oceanic first crashed, and also **In the future because he knows about oceanic 815, he cries when watching it on tv, but again, that future consciousness is locked in his brain tissue unactivated, unactivated for lack of better terms, but still neurologically present to cause Faraday to cry with sadness*** Thats a lot of time travel and a lot of jumbled memories.
So, the meat and potatoes is as follows:
-Daniel after meeting desmond does more experiemnts and maybe even gets recruited by Dharma for being such a leader in his field.
-Dan meets up with Dr. Marving Candle working in the dharma initiative.
-By some crazy ciscumstance, (Think memento, great movie btw)I believe that Dans notebook is the only way that he remembers his time travels from the future. He retains this book so even though he gets recruited by Dharma, he knows in his book what will happen to Dharma with the Purge and other stations. This is how he knows this information despite the high security and militarized secular nature of the Dharma initiative, we know that Dharma is BOSS status and seperates all of its experiemnts and departments to achieve operational efficiency, blah blah.
-He interacts with Pierre Change who is one of the few people to actually take him seriously and who he can confide in to keep this secret. I say this because of the comicon video remarks such as the following:
I was brought [static] years ago to conduct experiments to study the Kerr metric solution to the Einstein field equation and... [static] If i can hold this pinhole open long enough, you should be recieving my message roughly thirty years [static] If you're... [static] The American president is a man named George W. Bush and you share digital infomation instantaneously on something called "internet". And, unfortunatly, my colleagues and i are all dead [static] and if, of a violent purge, one that we are apparently powerless to escape. (he looks down sadly at his left arm, which looks normal, and grasps it with his other normal hand). [static] This infomation comes to me from a source that has proven himself to be credable.(Thanks DARKUFO for transcript)
-This Credible source is Dan Farraday, but there is more.
"Dr. Cheng: Because, if this transmission is successful, it's proof the work i've been doing here is valid. This place, it has extraordinary properties. I'm begging you, no matter what's happened, it's imperative that the DHARMA Initiative be reconstituted. You have to continue to research [static] and you have to do it now. Time is not just of the essence, it is the essence. Perhaps you'll be able to find a way to save us, to change the past and to [static] (something) You can't let it..."
-We cant let the same thing happen to the new Dharma? What this is? Dont know, honestly
-Chang knows he looses his arm because of Dan and he is seen grabbing his arm in the video when talking about the purge more proof.
-Dan is not too worried for his own life because he knows that his notebook continues to have entries by him well after the purge.
-Daniel will be key to helping understand and preventing the past incident, or a repeat because of his knowledge of time travel and his book story-telling device. The incident is probably a sequence of unpredictable time-space movements by the island resulting in massive confusion and death. Dharma could have interacted with anything from yes its a stretch, but ancient animals and beast, to ancient cultures, future cultures, aliens etc, anything is fair game.
***In fact, the original Dharma initiative had a list of all their stations or focuses and assuming the writers arent bullshitting and actually had the whould lost universe, I must assume these are all real projects that were thought about. Here is a refresher and now with season 5 starting, these things are seeming more and more likely.
