I'm sure you all remember the famous scene in the season three finale when it's finnaly revealed that the whole episode has been a flash-forward. The scene is later continued in the season four finale with Kate screaming at Jack about his ridicuolous idea to return.
I think that this was the perfect time to show that at least two of the losties left the island and at least one without a doubt has to go back.
What if Desmond did something he wasn't supposed to do...
something really, really terrible. Something like changing the future.
Daniel states that Des really is special and that the rules don't apply to him, he's the wild card.
Desmond knew Charlie was going to die, and he must of saved his fellow brit more than 10 times.
Characters don't die on LOST just becuase the writers wanted to make a more dramatic season finale.
Charlie was supposed to die becuase if he wouldn't, it would ultimately lead to something bad. Desmond changed the future by saving Charlie and Charlie turned off the Looking Glass station, which lead to the rescue of the O6.
Maybe Desmond changed the future just a little bit by saving Charlie but made things a lot worse by causing a 'time peridox'. The O6 weren't supposed to leave, becuase it didn't happen in the furute but, Desmond changed that.
I think the left behinders need the O6 to save them, and the island becuase they all have a greater destiny to possibly stop a very cataclysmic event like the end of all humanity (Valenzetti Equation?... etcetera.)
If the O6 don't go back...
