-----FARADAY THEORY
Season 5 is now upon us, and never has a show in recent memory been so open to interpretation. As LOST has evolved, vigourous debate has taken place over the shows proposed end,...or as Vozzek refers to as 'the event'. This show shall also refer to season 6's climax in Vozzek style as 'the event'.
The great thing about LOST is as much as we can debate, hypothesis and speculate over WHAT we think is going to happen...we have no idea WHO will be involved in the event.
This past summers Comic Con gave the LOST loyalists the usual teaser clip to satiate a thriving appetite for what happens next. Past clips revolving around DHARMA and their stations have been welcome and helpful to LOST theorists, however for the first time we were shown a direct conflict between Candle/Chang and one of his 'staff'. What's for sure is the video was no mere marketing teaser campaign to spike season 5's premiere, it was a crucial indicator of WHO the main antagonist of this show actually is.
(The video can be seen at this link....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HLJ7bPpI8VM)
Essentially the video shows Marvin Candle confessing his true identity as Dr Pierre Chang, and doing so in desperate fashion. Using what seems to be a last chance 'pinhole' to broadcast 30 years into the future, we get a major shock from an unseen male in the background possibly holding the camera. No attempt is made to hide or distort the voice....it is clearly DANIEL FARADAY!
Take special notice of at what point Faraday takes it upon himself, and against the wishes of Chang to end the broadcast by switching the camera off. He does so at the point where Chang implores any viewer to reconstitute the DHARMA initiative in an effort to CHANGE the past!
Faraday who can be heard merely seconds earlier pleading with Chang to be more concise in his message, immediately changes track and seeks to stop the transmission.
At which point you may ask,...why is this even relevant?
The reason of interest is simple. Faraday and Ms Hawkings are the only two characters to date who maintain with absolute certainty that the past CANNOT be changed, nor the future. A claim we can all agree is lent credibility due to Faradays scientific background, and as seen at the climax of 'The Lie', Ms Hawking making the transition from creepy flashback entity into a living breathing scientific calculations genius. Why would anyone query what these two state, bearing in mind their peaceful nature, qualifications and lack of harmful colusion?
WRONG!
Faraday has been written in a way to mislead the audience to this point. Having saw the season 5 premiere today, the opening scene placed him in the Orchid station with Chang an unspecified number of years in the past. Importantly Chang did not recognise him. We're being suckered into believing Faraday is travelling through time with the nobelest of causes.
Ask yourself this....why would Chang, a man of deep knowledge through his place in DHARMA, beg help from the future to come back in time to CHANGE THE PAST? A change that Faraday and Hawking maintain is impossible! This is the first real glimpse into the true definition of good and evil. Faraday and Hawking are working together, their bond most likely paternal. Like all other relationships on the show, its paternal issues. Hawking is Faradays mother! As we know everyone on LOST is named for a reason, I predict Chang's name comes from the word CHANGE itself!
Time travel is now the all important aspect of the show, and our two main guides for Desmond come in the form of Hawking and Faraday. I propose these two as a mother and son duo are attempting to manipulate Desmonds actions throughout the past/present/future in an effort to reach their desired version of 'the event'. What that may be is still anyones guess, however my proposal states Faraday/Hawking will emerge as the true big bad the show has teased us with.
Hawking used Desmond in a way to hammer home to him that change of both the past and future is impossible. Why is it that in that very episode, Desmond witnessed changes in the past. The football match ended differently than it did the first time, a subtle change but a change nonetheless. By getting Desmond at the beginning of his flashes, right as he turned the failsafe key...Hawking was able to form Desmonds crucial first impressions on time travel. A first impression that like everything else in life is hard to change.
Charlies death came about as a direct result of Desmonds interference stretching over a number of days, until Charlie could play the hero. At that time Desmond offered sparse information and explanation to Charlie, instead choosing to fall back on Hawkings argument...nothing can be changed. What if Desmond stepped in to save Charlie time after time? Would Charlie still be alive at season 5's start?
I propose Faraday/Hawking are aiming to manipulate Desmond into following a chain of events that ultimately cause time itself to unravel. A chain of events that Ben/Widmore/Jacob and countless others have tried to prevent from happening time loop after time loop.
The motive for Faraday/Hawking could be anything, however I suspect their roles are to facilitate each time loop or circle in time to 'come back around'. In Lehmans terms, the LAST thing they want is for time to escape the circle and progress in a linear fashion. 'The event' of season 6 will determine one of two things. Time either 'coming back around' or a completely original linear elapsing of time....a future occuring for the first time....one noone has seen before e.g. saving the world.
With the complexities of a long chain of events required to break the loop, who better qualified to act to preserve the looping of time than Faraday/Hawkings. With the passing of each loop, more and more knowledge is gained over what happens, and when. Such knowledge can be incredibly advantageous both on the island and off.
Widmore, Ben, Jack, Locke, Aaron, Walt and numerous others have all had the spotlight shone upon them as seasons tick by. Neither of which have been shown to be definitively 'the good guy' or 'the bad guy'. The writers use an ambiguity designed to keep us all guessing. The producers are quoted directly as saying at season 4's conclusion, Jacob has not even been cast yet.
-----THE EFFECT ON EVERYTHING
...the good side opposed to Faraday/Hawking has yet to be formalised. My bet is that Widmore/Ben/Jacob/Abbadon all want a variation of the same thing, to save the world but they don't know it yet. Rampant disagreement between them exists as how best to achieve it, however I assume that Jack's lineage holds the key.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, Jack's Grandfather will turn out to be Jacob! The family bloodline of Jacob, Christian, his progeny of Jack and Claire, and Aaron of course will be the key to establishing a counterance to Faraday/Hawking. The Ben/Widmore feud will be shown to exist as a direct result of Jacobs plight. Essentially they bicker over the scraps of Jacobs table, but once Jacob is back....once active again....the Shephard bloodline will be able to compositely come together and somehow trigger events that can break the loop.
I'm predicting it now...the whole affect of the whispers, visions etc will be shown to NOT be the islands agenda....but somehow affected by Hawking/Widmore. The whole 'you're not supposed to raise him Jack' will be shown not as raising Aaron.....BUT THE RAISING OF JACOB!
Hawking/Faraday know Jacobs raising is the ultimate gamechanger...what will result in the breaking of the loop and humanities salvation. Somehow they have been able to use the fabric of time and space to form these messages influencing LOST's characters into doing what they want. Vaguely using Aaron as a distraction...a reason not to go back to the island. Cleverly they can use other characters as reasons not do do things....things that MUST happen in the chain of events that saves humanity.
The only loose end in the shows mythology would be Locke. I'd bet all of the money in my pocket that a majority of the LOST fanbase believe Locke to be critical to saving humanity. I disagree and instead propose that Locke just like he has been all his life has been used as a pawn. The influence no doubt present throught his life by the Island, Richard, Abbadon amongst others may very well have conspired to bring him to the island. A man of blinding faith can be incredibly useful on the Island itself as a means of acheiving an agenda. A soldier with unwavering belief in whatever he is instructed to do. Not for the first time these orders will be exposed as being nothing more than coersion, and not once has the real Jacob communicated with him. Somehow the force manipulating Locke will be exposed as being designed by Hawking/Faraday.
