Take a moment and think of the events of lost as having already happened. There is an ending that the characters have already made it to, or will get to, but they aren't aware of it. This idea works best if you accept that there is some sort of time loop.
Take for example that Michael couldn't kill himself. He couldn't shoot himself, he couldn't kill himself in his car. What I'm telling you is that, it's not that the island wouldn't let him kill himself. It's that he had already effected past events by something he was going to do in the future. That means if he had already done this future event, then in order to have done it, he couldn't have killed himself.
Likewise when he finally did die and Christian showed up to tell him he could go now, that wasn't the island killing him, but rather the Island being indifferent. It didn't care whether Michael lived or died, because he had already gone beyond the time where his death would have created a paradox.
We see this with Ben. Ben knows that he's destined to do something. That's why he's placed himself in dangerous situations over and over, and appears confident, because he knows that Sayid couldn't have killed him if he knew he was alive to complete a task afterwards. It's not destiny per se' but a literal fact that these characters have already completed acts that from their point of view happen in the future.
Desmond, after the implosion, has an understanding of this now. He knows that certain things have already happened, and merely seem as though they happen in the future. What is meant by the idea of course correction is that say Jack is Adam from Adam and Eve, then regardless of whether or not he leaves the Island, he's already gone back into the past, which means the timeline will course correct and he'll come back. He has to, he already did. We just haven't seen it.
Likewise Charlie, despite his warnings, really accomplished nothing in his death. The O6 got on the helicopter anyway. Why, because they had to become seperated from the Islanders.
Let's think about Ben for a moment. So far, he conned Locke into not pushing the button, which revealed the Island, allowed the freighter to come and to ultimately take the O6 away and then Ben moved the Island. He set up the O6 to leave on purpose through his manipulation of their emotions so that the others could travel back into the Islands past, and now he is Manipulating the O6 to return. He's set the whole thing up. Everything is going exactly how he intended. He just plays stupid occasionally because he knows he has to. The Islanders have already gone back, the O6 have already returned, and he knows what they did in order to get back through the time loop to where they are now.
