Hey guys, this is a theory I can't claim- one of my friends came up with it, but I like it, so I thought I'd share- be hard on it. I'd like to see where the holes are.
What we know:
- The Flight 815 survivors cross paths with each other in their flashbacks.
- Pushing the button in the Swan computer discharged some sort of electromagnetic anomaly every 108 minutes. (2.23: LT,DA)
- Inman warned Desmond of some sort of sickness outside the Swan, for which he should inject himself with a syringe and wear a hazmat suit. (2.23: LT,DA)
- Desmond's flashes are connected somehow with the Swan electromagnetism and the Island's "bubble." (3.08: FBYE, 4.05: TC)
- Unless one cures oneself by finding a "constant" within a certain period of time, they'll die. (4.05: TC)
The Theory:
What if the Swan's computer moved the Island in some way or issued forth enough electromagnetism every 108 minutes, the produced, for Island inhabitants, the same phenomenon that triggered Desmond's flashes, and that THIS is "the sickness" that Rousseau talked about?
This basically would have started with The Incident. Dharma noticed some seriously weird and scary stuff going on with nosebleeds outside the Swan, so they equipped the crew with hazmat suits and injections.
These nosebleeds happen because people all over the Island are flashing back to a different time. Perhaps Dharma, and therefore, the Others, figured out that the injections actually work, and therefore were okay.
But the survivors of Flight 815 wouldn't have access to those injections. But thanks to Fate/The Island's Grand Plan, they did, however, almost all have constants in those other times- each other.
This might explain why the Losties cross paths with each other so often, and also possibly why the Others are so interested in children- that because the children are so young, they would have much less of a chance of being able to find a constant on the Island.
Thoughts? Fire away!
