While re watching LOST, it became more clear that Libby there was more to Libby than meets the eye.
I have a little theory about what Libby's backstory is... as we are yet to see it.
I believe that something traumatic happened to Libby... probably something to do with her husband's death... which led her to become istitutionalised - in Santa Rosa with Hurley...
I also believe her husband was involved with Widmore's quest to find the island and it was during this quest that Libby's husband was killed. That is how Libby has some connection with Widmore.
Widmore later contacts Libby, or the other way round (maybe she was looking for answers) which results in Widmore setting up Libby to give Desmond a sailing boat.
Now I think there is one of at least two reasons for this - either the boat had some tracking device on it which would ultimately lead Widmore to the island.... or Widmore also has knowledge of the overall 'game' so to speak and planted Desmond on the island to disrupt events.
Because we know that if it weren't for Desmond activating the failsafe, in turn revealing the island to the outside world, in turn allowing Widmore's freighter to arrive, Widmore would have found it very difficult to discover the island's location.
The I was wondering why Libby would be on Oceanic 815 and I realised maybe she was there, for the same reason I believe Seth Norris... the pilot was there! They were there to intervene in some way to hijack 815 and take it to the island. Unfortunately... Desmond interrupted the process when he didnt push the execute button in the hatch causing 815 to crash instead.
