So... IF the island moved in time (rather than or as well as moving in space)... and if it moved to a time when he existed on the island but was younger... he wouldn't be able to travel with the island... hence it moving him somewhere "safe"... the whole Doctor Who ("you can't meet yourself! The universe will implode/explode!") thing...
But... thinking about this a bit further... Jacob wanted them to move the island... yet the freighties had already been dealt with before they eventually moved it... so... what if, instead of moving things away from some problem as people thought (ie. Widmore), he wanted the island "moving" because someone in the past is needed to help with things in the future...?
ie. the Losties could end up travelling back in time in order to bring someone back to the regular time...? (are they gonna move the island again?)
