After wondering for some time how Matthew Abaddon fits into the plot of Lost, I realise I should have thought of this idea before.
There is a possibility that Jacob and Widmore were brothers, employed on the Black Rock and, along with the rest of the crew of the marooned ship, were granted long life and foresight by the island.
Jacob had the stronger vision, and could foresee the true purpose of the island. He therefore gained the trust of Richard Alpert, also enlightened, who had been on the island for even longer. Possibly the last survivor of the civilisation which had originally found the artefacts and marked them with glyphs. This ‘true purpose’ would be cataclysmic for the human race, but necessary for its survival.
Charles Widmore’s foresight may have shown him the same, but he chose to deny this vision in favour of exploiting the island for wealth, the ‘wrong’ purpose. So the Black Rock survivors would have split into opposing factions, led by the respective brothers. I now think that Abaddon was loyal to Charles, not to Jacob.
Jacob’s followers, the good guys as claimed by Ben Linus, had one major advantage. The black smoke would have defended the island and Jacob. Charles would have been forced to leave the island with a few trusted followers, including Abaddon, intending to reclaim it later.
There would have then been good Others on the island, and bad Others in the outer world.
So, decide for youself :
“You need to take a walkabout Mr Locke”
Good Other foresees plane crash that will bring a ‘special’ person to the island to join them? Or bad Other foresees that John will destabilise Ben’s leadership?
“These are the wrong sort of people for a covert mission in unstable territory”
“There were no survivors of 815! Get them in, get them out, and try to prevent anyone getting killed”
Good Other working undercover in Widmore’s organisation, attempting to send in people [Faraday etc] who can help the Losties?
Or bad Other sending in replacement researchers to restart Dharma projects for Widmore, to be followed by the mercenaries who will kill everyone else?
“Are they still alive?”
Good Other, undercover in employ of Oceanic, trying to assess state of Losties and his own people on the island before Ben moved it?
Or bad Other, trying to interrogate the vulnerable Hurley for information, while working undercover at Oceanic for Widmore.
If the Black Rock scenario suggested is valid, then Widmore would instantly remember one of Jacob’s followers, so for that reason I believe that Abaddon can’t be ‘aguddon’.
