Hey everyone!
I wrote a theory a while back entitled 'Pregnancy and the Island' that tied ideas from Lost to those in The Time Travellers Wife. This theory will expand on some of those points, and offer some ideas about the overarching mythology.
So here goes--
1. The Island and Time
Okay, this first part is difficult to explain without diagrams. I believe that over the last two seasons (3, 4) there have been hints that the Island exists separately from time and space as we know it. The best way I can explain this is for you to imagine the island as a 'dome' that kind of encloses linear time and space. To be on the island is to exist in a different dimension-- abiet one that is close enough to the real world to influence it in significant ways.
So imagining the Island as a dome, separate from reality, casts new light on the flashbacks and flashforwards. I believe that the events taking place in the flashbacks from season 1, 2, 3 and 4 are actually occurring as the Losties are on the Island. Underneath the Island dome; past, present and future are existing simultaneously. So, for example, as John Locke is on the Island, he is also a child in his foster home drawing pictures of Smokey; he is also sitting at his Fathers house being the 'stalker;' and he is also dead.
I believe, that if one leaves the Island at specific locations, they will 'drop' back into the real world at different times. And the Others know exactly how to manipulate this-- but more on this later.
This idea of the Island as separate from Time/Space leads me too:
2. The Island and Consciousness:
Ever since I was a teen, I have been reading books that explore consciousness at a quantum level. Some of these books, such as The Physics of Consciousness, also tie many ideas to time travel, and several theories link extremely close to Lost. One of these books explores the idea of all time existing simultaneously-- that is, past, present and future are all occurring at once.
What this means is, there are several 'me's' and 'you's' operating 'out there' at the same time. The book goes on to say that instead of each of these 'individuals' having their own consciousness, they have one consciousness that is interconnected and permeates time and space. So, based on this theory, my 'mind' is linked to the 'mind' of me in the future, and the past etc. The body, according to this theory, is just a receiver of a greater, separate consciousness. This theory seeks to explain premonitions and 'intuition' as merely picking up on the thoughts/experiences of yourself in the future.
This theory of consciousness is key to the ideas in Lost. In the normal, real world, there may be little to no chance of consciousness ever 'jumping' bodies. But as our Losties are on the Island, which exists separately, and therefore at the same time as the real world, consciousness can become 'confused' (for lack of a better word) and jump bodies.
Now, as our 'minds' from different time periods are linked, I believe that information can slip between bodies and, with enough 'training', can be purposefully sent between different 'selves'. Lets look at some examples:
1. Desmond: His brain/mind has been altered in some way by the electromagnitism of the Island. I believe his brain has been altered in such a way that he receives continual information from his future self. Furthermore, as I said at the beginning of this theory, if he gets too close to specific exit points on the Island, his conscousness 'drops' through to the real world at different points in time. His past and present consciousness 'swap' their positions.
2. John Locke: After the episode where Richard visits a young Locke, several people predicted (me included) that reincarnation was in play. That Locke was a past Island elder reborn, and Richard was testing if it was really 'him.' But I have a different theory, based on my ideas of consciousness.
What if, those who can send information between their 'selves' are considered special in some way? I believe that Richard, after meeting Locke on the Island, dropped back to the real world at the time Locke was a child. The picture of Smokey on the wall is an indication that child Locke is picking up on the experiences of present Locke (as they are existing simultaneously), through their consciousness.
I think Richard was testing Lockes level of mind 'interconnectedness.' I wouldn't be suprised, if next season, Richard gives present Locke one of the items presented to child Locke, then disappears for a period of time to see if child Locke can 'see' what is happening on the island.
3. Walt: It has been hinted that the Others saw something special in Walt. It's also been hinted that Walt has to ability to 'see' the future, or know what is going to happen. He also seems to be able to appear at different locations-- which may hint at an ability to project across the barrier separating the Island and the real world. What my theory suggests is that in the real world, the Island is everywhere, but nowhere. It exists on a different vibration, or frequency to the real world.
I believe that the Others were seeking people whose consciousness interconnectedness was so powerful that they could break through the barrier between the Island and reality, influencing time and space. This may be their idea of special.
So, applying these ideas to Lost, we can understand how John seems to know when it will rain etc (he picks it up from his future self), and we may also have an explanation for why the Losties seem to entounter each other so much in the real world pre-island. Because while they are existing during this time, they are also together on the Island, and I think this seems to draw them together in some way.
The visions/dreams etc that so many of the Losties have experienced could be sent to them by their future 'selves.'
The idea of past, present and future existing simultaneously also means (and this is outlined more thoroughly in the book) that the future cannot be changed, as it has already, or is, happening. I know this seems to be a rule in Lost, that one can't change the future-- the universe will make sure it stays in course.
Anyway, I'll leave it there for now. I'll add more as I think of more :) Feel free to comment, criticise, expand!
