In Series 3 episode 1, during Locke’s sweat tent meditation, Boone appears and impresses upon John the need to save Eko. But he also says that he will help him find his way, so that John can get the ‘family’ back together again.
At first I thought this referred to the future rescue of the captured Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley. But now I think ‘family’ meant something different and more significant to the overall plot. Relatives of Jacob, to be precise, and these almost certainly include Widmore, probably John Locke, and possibly Christian and Jack.
For some reason, the island needs a specific group of people to be there. Presumably Jacob is willing this to happen, hence Jacob’s list. Is this to repair some space/timeline Dharma accident? Or could it go back to the Black Rock, when the survivors may have interfered with the island’s artefacts?
We have seen Ben confront Charles Widmore in Series 4, where they agree that Ben cannot kill Charles. This is either something to do with the ‘rules’, which Ben later refers to, or because the island needs Widmore alive. But Ben is trying to prevent the return of Widmore as the owner/exploiter of the island. Can you imagine the wealth the island would generate for Charles? Healing powers, long life, eventual secret home of the world’s richest.
Ben preventing Widmore’s return may have been for the greater good of the island, but it angered Jacob. Perhaps Jacob’s apparition had not spoken to Ben for some time before that ‘help me’ plea to John.
