First off, this is my first time posting a theory, so bear with me:
Several things struck me while rewatching Season 3, in particular "Flashes Before Your Eyes" the other night, which made me think that Desmond is the "Wild Card" in the "equation" that is L O S T.
First, when its mentioned to Ben that "they have a sailboat,"(meaning the Elizabeth) he is genuinely shocked. Every other instance in the show Ben seems to be calm and composed, and this rattles him a bit.
Next, in "Flashes," when Des goes to see his physicist friend, the guy is having a conversation which basically says "Run the same test 10 times and youll always get a different outcome.. the wild card variables.. etc etc.." then Desmond walks in, and the physicist remarks "For example, who could have known a drunk Scotsman would walk into the rotunda?" And then, Ms. Hawking says to Des, "Youve never done this before, have you?" thats when it clicked.
What if its like people are speculating, and Ben has been reliving events over and over again, things [playing out slightly different each time, but overall, the same outcome. Then, a drunken Scotsman came and crashed his boat into Benjamins rotunda.. who couldve known? thus, the key was turned, Widmore finds the Island, Alex is killed, the Oceanic 6 leave, and "Bad things started happening."
(respectful) comments and suggestions are more than welcome!
