Just a thought, but it occurred to me that I still have some lingering weirdness over the relationship between Ben, Alex, and Danielle. So far we know that Alex is Danielle’s daughter, and that she was more or less adopted by Ben. But why? Ben and Danielle didn’t seem to know each other during their brief interactions. We also have never seen any evidence of the science team that Danielle supposedly worked with. We haven’t seen any remains of those she supposedly killed, the boat they traveled in on, or learned what it was they were supposed to be doing. We do know that Danielle is not quite all there, but we’ve only assumed that her condition is due to her long period of solitude.
So I had an idea. Given the lack of evidence as to her science team’s existence or death’s, what if Danielle had been a part of Dharma. Stay with me here. Let’s say she was against the purge, but Ben didn’t want to kill her even though she posed a risk to his plans, so they put her in room 23, which drove her crazy and let her loose in the woods to fend for herself, taking her baby Alex in the process to keep her safe. I’m only willing to entertain this as there has been no other reason given for introducing room 23 to us, or what else it may have been used for. It would also explain the whole’s in Danielle’s back story and her deep confusion. Alex may have even been taken forcefully from her right before they put her in the room, making it her last real memory. This would also explain her wishy washy French accent and appearance if she merely knew French, and only now believes that she must be French. She could have run with the idea and over a period ! of years and confusion about where she actually came from, created the story that she was on a science team, and explained their non-presence by making up a story of their deaths due to illness. There is also some chance perhaps that she is Annie. That creates an interesting dynamic as it would explain why Ben wouldn’t kill her, but would also lead one to wonder why he would put her in room 23. Perhaps her insanity wasn’t the intended consequence in that case.
I say all of this, because it seems that a number of us believe that Danielle must have some significance. As it stands now, she’s barely meant anything to the overall story. If even a few of the ideas above are correct, it would go a long way to tying her into the story at large, and perhaps set her up as a much more important character than we all imagined.
