Ok, I have a little more time to state my theory now. I stated in part one of my theory that I thought both Jacob and Alpert were on the Black Rock. Alpert fits the bill because he is seemingly "ageless" and in "Man Behind the Curtain," he is seen wearing a shipmate's outfit and a revolver on his hip (both look very 1800's). Jacob is seen in a glimpse by Locke in the same episode and is wearing something similar and has long hair in a pony tail (check the screen caps and see for yourself). So here is a more complete theory of what may have happened (keep in mind that I submit some of this a theory and some of it as mere speculation because on some of it there is simply not enough info given yet).
I think the original inhabitants of the island developed the smoke monster, constructed the temple, statue (four toed), etc. Possibly the island was somewhere else and moved directly under the Black Rock(?), which is how it is found so far inland. I think if this is true, then the first move and smoke monster signify that there has always been a power struggle over control of the island between those who would exploit it's properties and those who want to protect it.
When the Black Rock makes it to the island, Jacob has a special (Locke-like) connection to the island. The primitive inhabitants sort of worship him because they are expecting him in a sort of Messiah sense. There certainly seems to be a reincarnation element to the show. Over time however, two factions once again develop and are at odds with each other. Jacob is possibly killed and Hanso (along with others, Widmore?) are banished from the island. I think there is a possibility that Widmore could have been on the ship too and is "ageless" as well, but I'm pretty skeptical of this. I think the legend of the island makes its way down to Alvar Hanso and they use the diary and a financial backer to rediscover the island under the Dharma Initiative. This would explain why they need protection from the smoke monster and why Alpert (a loyalist to Jacob) is among the "Hostiles."
So the power shifts to the DI, who would exploit the island rather than protect it, thus the purge. I also think, on a sidenote, that Widmore or Abbadon could have possibly been a previous leader of the other. Ben said that he wasn't always in charge and that he himself did not order the purge (in "Cabin Fever" I think). Honestly, I'm not sure how Widmore factors in just yet, but my guess is Ben takes the island from him in the purge.
Desmond and the Oceanic passengers come in so that Des can push the button (1. to save the world and 2. so that the island remains hidden. Remember that it was the electromagnetic anomoly that made the island visible to Penny's researchers). Several reason are possible for Oceanic 815, but I think the most obvious reason is Locke getting to the island. He has the Jacob-like connection to the island. Notice that Locke is adamantly against leaving the Island and tries at all cost to keep the freighter from getting there. He also admits he was wrong in stopping to push the button. If the button would have continued to be pushed, widmore would've never found the island.
Anyway, there it is, I don't have any good ideas about where it all is going, but I think this is a decent explanation for what has happened. Also, I think there is something significant about these "ageless" people and that the island being moved back in time at the end of last season explains why so many people pop up in people's lives (like Desmond) trying to steer them to the island. I'd appreciate any comments.
