THE PLAGUE, THE PURGE OF DHARMA, THE RULE OF BENJAMIN
For many years the Chosen kept faith in the last words of Jacob, and observed the life of John Locke in the outer world. Then Dharma scientists came to the island, and the prophecy unfolded as Jacob had described. The Usurpers made demands upon Dharma that their discoveries should be used for profit only, and not for the good of humankind. The plague was prepared by the Usurpers, with which they intended to infect any part of the world they chose. And an antidote was made by Dharma on the island, which the Usurpers would control. Thus all humans would one day pay to be free of the plague. And the richest people in the world would pay a high price to live on the island owned by the Usurpers, for they would live longer lives, free of disease.
Then Mittelwerk, one of the Usurpers, infected the people of remote villages in Sri Lanka, with the plague. For he deceived them into thinking they had taken a vaccine for another disease. When the deaths began, the true antidote was given only to a few, and the Usurpers claimed they had made a cure for the plague. And they were believed and exalted by the governments of the world. At this time the Usurpers could control the Plague, for they had supplies of antidote from the island.
When the scientists learned that others lived on the island, they became wary of them, and named them ‘hostiles’. For they were clothed as seafarers from the previous century, and strange whispering sounds accompanied their movements. There were rumours that a black smoke drifted through the forest, and had killed Dharma workers near the caverns they had built. So the scientists made a barrier, to protect the Dharma houses from the Hostiles and the black smoke.
Then the child of the prophecy, Benjamin, ventured into the forest. He was led there from the houses of Dharma by an apparition of his mother, who had died at his birth. There he met Alpert, who realised that the child could communicate with the island. Thus Benjamin secretly began to learn the ways of the Chosen while still living in the houses of Dharma. And as the years passed, Benjamin learned to have more faith in the island than in the works of the scientists.
Then the scientists ordered that the Hostiles be be killed, by infecting them with the Plague, and only those in the employ of Dharma were given the antidote. And Benjamin went to warn the Chosen, but on his way found a cabin he had not seen before. When he entered, the apparition of Jacob appeared to him and spoke. “Strike down the Dharma Scientists! They can no longer be tolerated on this island. Spare only the children, for they are innocent.” When the Chosen heard the words of Jacob through Benjamin, they rejoiced, for now they could reclaim the island.
On the appointed day Benjamin caused the houses of Dharma to become unguarded by setting down the barrier. The Dharma scientists and workers were purged by the Chosen, as ordered by Jacob. And in accordance with the prophecy they made Benjamin their leader.
The Chosen moved into the houses of Dharma and learned how to use the Dharma machines in the caverns and hatches. And some of the Chosen were sent to the outer world to spy on the Usurpers. Thus Benjamin knew they were infecting innocent people with the plague. For several years Benjamin deceived the Usurpers, for he reported to them as if he was the new leader of Dharma. The Usurpers believed that the work of Dharma continued, and knew nothing of the purge. But when they asked Benjamin why they had not been sent more vials of antidote, he could not answer truthfully. For the scientists who made the antidote had been slain. And the Usurpers came to realise that Benjamin was working against them, and made plans to recapture the island.
But although Benjamin was brave, the burden of leadership was heavy upon him. And he became obsessed with holding power over others. Thus he deceived and humiliated any he considered a threat. But the Chosen remained loyal, for they had seen his plans work many times, and thought that Jacob still favoured him.
In truth, the Spirit of the island now prevented Jacob from speaking to Benjamin. For although Benjamin protected the Chosen, the Spirit did not approve of his methods. And if one of the Chosen questioned his decisions, Benjamin would lie, and say “Jacob told me to do this”. Yet the island tolerated him, and allowed him one last vision on the day before John Locke’s arrival. And Benjamin’s dream showed John Locke falling out of the sky with many others who would become lost on the island. In the sky were the numbers that controlled one of the machines that Dharma had built around an artefact. There was fire behind John, and the sky was purple.
