I was looking around in Lostpedia today and managed to find myself looking at a link about the blast door map, which I think still holds several clues that we are yet to discover. Anyway, here is the link I was looking at:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/kimsphotos/lost/243bfbf3.jpg
There is a small comment on the bottom that asks, who is Magnus? Well at this point, we all know that Magnus was the likely captain of the Black Rock ship as well as great grandfather of Alvar Hanso. The article however mentions the book, The Magus, as a possible source of the name. So, naturally, I searched for more info on The Magus. Here is the page I found:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magus_(novel)
Not that I think Magnus is really derived from the Magus, but it did lead me down a trail. The book is about a man who moves to a Greek island to teach and to get away from his Australian girlfriend who is getting too serious. The main character finds himself playing a god-game on the island that gets increasingly dark. Well, the fact that the man is on an island and we have Greek and Australian references is enough for me to consider it influential, or at least a great coincidence. There is also a great deal of game references in LOST, so I thought I might be on to something. I searched on to learn more about the concept of a god-game, and here is the link that I found:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_game
The link speaks of a novel and a video game concept. The novel is just a book where the character gets caught in a god-game spurred by a video game. The video game concept of a god-game is one in which the player has to play the role of God. The player controls the environment in ways that get all the little players to do something, much like The Sims. OK, sounds like it might relate to LOST. Then I read on, going further down the rabbit hole, to see that there is a specific God-Game made for PC called Black & White. Wow, we see a lot of black and white references in LOST. Here is the link to the game:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_%26_White_(game)
(This link was wrong before) Now it’s the game itself that I think is very interesting. It is also about a player that rules over and island populated by many tribes. It’s got all sorts of LOST related stuff in it…vortex gateways, animals, good vs. evil. Read about the plot in the link, I think there are many parallels. The player is a God of an island, where they can choose to do good or evil. The environment of the island will change dark or light depending on the actions of the player. It also wouldn’t be far fetched to assume that a video game could influence LOST, as I read in Wikipedia, that the game Myst was a large influence in the shows creation. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_(TV_series) )
OK, so we all know that there are mass amounts of games and game references in LOST, as well as rules. Hey, why not another set of links for reference:
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Game
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Rules
What do you all think it means? I know that there have been several theories that indicate that LOST is a game, but how? No one has really been too specific, at least not in theories I’ve read, as to the game that is being played. I think that the game that is being played by Ben and Widmore might possibly be a God-game. Maybe the island is some sort of playing field for a game. (Again, don’t freak out, I know it’s been talked about before, just bear with me.)
OK, now I don’t know the specifics, true, but there are so many possibilities for what the game could be. Here is a possibility…I think that there can be only 1 (like highlander) god of the island, but there is a battle between people to obtain that position and it is a position that has probably been usurped over and over through the ages. Only certain people can even be the god of the island, people that are special. Being the god of the island comes with its special set of rules, and by obeying the rules, one can remain god for a long time and make the island happy and reap rewards of immortality for themselves and family. The challenge, once someone has become God, is to stay humble and not get a God-Complex. With great power, comes great responsibility. The God must respect their position and learn that no one can dominate the land.
By not obeying the rules (which would show great character flaws), the God will lose his position to another. When someone has been God (or leader) of the island, and is no longer, they have a new set of rules by which they must abide. They will lose their rewards and will suffer nightmares, depression, death and loss. It turns into a classic lesson of power and its corruption. To hold the position of God/Leader for a long time would show a great amount of integrity in that person’s character. That person would be respected and valued as a great leader and the inhabitants of the island would erect (Ha, I said erect) great statues in honor of that person. Eventually, the pendulum swings the other way, the great leader is overthrown and the statues are destroyed.
Think of it as a parallel to the rules for becoming the US president. A president has to be born in the US, lived in the US for 14 years and must be at least 35 years old. A president can also serve for a maximum of 2 terms. I think the rules on the island, at least for the God/Leader, are similar. Perhaps there is also a set of rules for the inhabitants of the island which are separate from the God/Leader rules and parallel the rule of our society.
Expanding here with some specifics: I was surprised to see that this theory got any kind of good response on other sites, especially since it’s a “LOST is a game” theory. I am not proposing it is a game, in the sense that these people are actually sitting in chairs living in some sort of Matrix reality. I am proposing that it is a real life game that is happening every day. It is as much of a game as the recent election. McCain and Obama both had to run campaigns that required strength, wit and strategy. Obama played better and came out the winner. Now, it’s not like Obama gets a cash prize or bragging rights, instead he has to take his position of high stakes and do great things. He too will come to find challenges that will test his integrity.
One very interesting character of the game is Richard Alpert. I think that Richard could be the gate-keeper or moderator of the game and its rules. You could think of him as a debate moderator or game-show host (I am not calling LOST a game show by any means). Perhaps Richard himself was once a great God/Leader of the island. Perhaps the fact that he was a great leader led people to erect (I said it again) a statue of him, maybe he has 4-toes. I think that one day, a long time ago, Richard lost his leadership role to someone and now the “rules” dictate that he can no longer be a leader, like he has served his term. Richard cares so deeply about the island and the rest of the world, that he is now dedicated to guiding future Gods/Leaders of the island to take the right path.
So this leads me into thinking, why a god-game? Is there still a real God around? I think the answer is yes, but the one true God cannot communicate and control here on earth in a direct way, so he must do it through a special person who is God/Leader of the island. This person is somewhat of the one true God’s liaison to this world. It just wouldn’t be fair if the real God could speak to us directly and affect our fate directly. Our fate must lie in the balance of our own kind, man-kind, who is always fallible. Man-kind must make the right decision to obey the word or the true God, or face destruction
Did anyone here see Dogma (it’s a great movie)? There is an idea in it that we mortal human beings could not stand the wonder and glory of the one true God. The sight or sound of his (or her) voice would cause a mortal to explode. Maybe it is somewhat similar on LOST. Maybe the real God cannot talk to Man-kind directly. He has to get his message to the islands God/Leader through the spirits of the dead, or even through glitchy apparitions from different times (Jacob anyone?).
So why are these people special, and what makes them so? I’m going to leave this one to destiny. Each of these special people were born with something, from the very beginning. Each person plays a part and has a destiny. The final decisions are made freely, but the true God has anointed these people to be gifted and to have a good heart. God couldn’t just make it easy either, he decides to throw challenges at these special people, challenges that will make life difficult, challenges that they must overcome. Some of these people become stronger from the challenges and some of them are weak and take the easy way out. It is the challenge of fate that makes a strong God/Leader.
I think the temple will give us a great deal of information about this God-game. I think it is the temple where any potential God/Leader learns about the island, its past and its role in the world. The temple is a place where one can learn of the islands purpose and history and where one can learn their own role in the game.
I’m sure most of you are wondering now, what about so many other un-answered questions? How do they tie in with this God-Game theory? Well I think that a lot of things that occur are a way of reflecting the decision of a current God/Leader. The one true God cannot just strike people down with lightning to punish them, he will give cancer or illness to those who are displeasing him. He will cause issues that reflect their greatest fears, like perhaps women die during childbirth because Ben’s mother did, and it is one thing that haunts him every day.
This theory is flexible and not all concrete, just some thoughts and possibilities. Some of which could be spot on and some could be way out there. It can also tie in great with many other theories out there. I think time travel could be one of the gifts/powers that come with being a God. I think Smokey (Cerberus) is the protector of the island, like a security system, put there by the one true God. I think that the DI is a group of scientists that tried to approach the island with a scientific view, leaving out all possibilities of divine intervention, which led to the end of the DI.
Whatever your un-answered question is, I’m sure it can we worked into this idea somehow. Let me know if any of you have any questions or suggestions for this theory, I have not problem updating again. Thanks to all for reading and commenting.
