Purely on the basis of an enhanced apparition of 'The Man Behind the Curtain', seen on YouTube, Jacob's profile seems more like Widmore's than anyone else's. Could they be related?
I reckon Magnus Hanso laid claim to the island, registering it as newly discovered. He took the legal papers with him when he returned to the island on the Black Rock, but died on the island soon after.
Jacob took possession of the papers, and somehow sent them back to the outside world. To a brother, in good faith, perhaps, to be returned to the Hansos. But the papers were kept in the family and passed down through the generations, ultimately to the greedy Charles. We have seen Charles claiming ownership of the island when accusing Ben of stealing it.
Charles must have gained knowledge of the island's location only after taking possession of the journals of the first mate of the Black Rock, almost certainly his ancestor, Jacob.
It was Magnus's descendant, Alvar, who funded the Dharma Initiative. But this was probably taken over by Widmore Industries, if I have understood the Rachel Blake videos correctly.
Ben obviously wanted to prevent a triumphant Widmore finding the island. But is it possible that Charles is one of the people on Jacob's List, who must be returned to the island in the final reckoning?Theory by Dishyvaeda
