Warning: this is highly confusing, but makes sense if you can understand math.
The Constant, we saw evidence of this construct when Desmond leaves the island and flashes back and forth between his past and present (or so it seems up to this point, who knows with LOST!). Now my theory is based around the idea that in order to leave the island you must replace yourself on the island with someone else, making them your constant.
As we have seen in the show, there are a fairly large amount of characters who are mathematicians or scientists of some sort. The Constant I believe is not a term to be taken in context, but it is a Constant in the Valenzetti equation (revealed in the LOST experience) which is a mathematical prediction of "doomsday." Now back to Desmond. I feel he ended up on the island as an accident in the sailing race and was introduced into the equation as a new variable. Now once he leaves the island the variability of Desmond would drop to zero, since he is no longer on the island. He starts to experience flashes because he has disrup! ted the equation.
For example, if the equation was set up so that desmond's variability on the island= desmond's variability off island, the only way for the equation to be corrected is to have desmond's variability off island drop to zero, which ultimately happens when time jumping as we see with Minokowski. Now, the CONSTANT aspect of this equation. Once someone leaves the island they must find a common ground between the island and the real world. Also, I believe we are slightly steered in the wrong direction about Desmond's Constant because I feel his constant is Faraday, not Penny.
Desmond is instructed to meet Daniel at Oxford in the past and tell him to punch in numbers to create Desmond as Daniel's constant. I feel since Desmond went back and saw Faraday in the past it doesn't automatically link Desmond and Faraday. Time on the island is seen to move differently and the constant aspect of the equation does not happen until Desmond's past timeline and Daniel's ! on island timeline coincide. I think we are led to believe th! is also coincides with when Penny and Desmond finally contact each other and Desmond overcomes The Sickness. Now back to the equation, with Daniel and Desmond as constants. This constant aspect adds to each side of the equation to negate the 0 variability caused by Desmond leaving. Now the equation has balanced since Faraday has taken desmonds spot.
This is very confusing and I can illustrate this much better visually if anyone wants to help sculpt this theory.
I also think this constant cascade is seen with Christian-Jack-Aaron and i will write this up later. Feel free to comment/help formulate a better approach to this theory, I feel like i'm on to something!
