This is kind of a response to The theory titled "Dr. Locke and Mr. Bentham" only without the physical time traveling.
Ever since Des time traveled in his mind I have thought there was no way they would waste such a great concept on one character. I am convinced that Ben can (used to be able to) do this at will... This is how he hid that lunchbox with the mirror in it... Its like that scene in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure where they remind themselves to time travel back to the police station and hide a key... Then it's instantly there. Ben saw that rock formation, remembered walking by it with his lunchbox when he was a kid, remembered he had a mirror in there, and as a 10 yr old or whatever, buried it there. Then, instantly, Ben has his mirror.
Ben could also change the future, in a sense, because he had an infinite amount of "undos." This is why everything worked out for him... because if something went wrong he would just go back in his head and try something else. He was in situations where the losties were a hair away from murdering him many times. I don't know if he can still do it or not... guess we'll find out next season.
But, THIS is why I think Alex's death was so significant... Remember he didn't say Widmore BROKE the rules... he CHANGED them. For some reason Ben wasn't able to skip back a moment and try a new line with Keamy as he saw the trigger pulled. Notice that this didn't initially make Ben angry... it made him really confused.
Another reason I think we will see Mind Travel figure heavily in the show is that it can carry a lot of emotional weight, especially in the context of regret and redemption. The ability to change/ fix the past vs. moving on. Theory by Zimmer
