I have a theory on agelessness that was sparked by the premier episode of Fringe. My theory is also relevant to all time equations.
Synchronization. If you saw the episode, you witnessed a subject loaded with LSD, stuck in a sensory deprivation chamber and hooked into a biofeedback system designed to Synchronize brain patterns, which brought the two minds into a shared, though somewhat bizarre, surrealistic environs. It is the synchronizing of minds that inspired me.
In the case of Desmond time travel experience, it was merely his present mind state that needed to be synchronized with his mind of the past. Keep in mind, all that we are is locked within our brains. Unlock it, copy it, bring it to the forefront and reinforce it. Synchronize the brain waves of the present self with the past self and you have a Fringe mind connection experience.
I believe it is possible that Richard Alpert utilized this same method of transport. But, Richard never ages. Ben once said to Richard, "You remember birthdays?" So, he has lived long without signs of age. And I think this agelessness is not a static event. His hair grows. Only regeneration can account for agelessness of this kind. But, is agelessness independent of time regression? Not Necessarily!
Regeneration may be a byproduct of time travel. Remember that Desmond's method of time travel is based on the synchronization of past and present mind. Certainly, if the present mind can enter the past in this fashion, there must be a reciprocal action of the past mind inhabiting the future. This act happen simultaneously. Past/future = future/past. After all, where did the mind of past Desmond go when future Desmond inhabited his body? Wouldn't the future be the most likely result?
Now, if this past Desmond mind is accustomed to a more youthful acclimation, such a mind would tend to influence the future self in a manner consistent with that youthful state. The mind leads and the brain and body follow. Therefore, if you have a young mind, youthfulness is ultimately transmitted to the body and would act in a regenerative fashion. That is the only way the young mind knows how to think, knows how to influence growth patterns. The youth of previous Desmond would inevitably change present Desmond and regenerate him.
And that is how Richard, using a similar method of time regression, might eventuate into a regenerative body through time travel, and how Desmond may likely follow.
After thought:
This scenario might also account for Desmond's insight into the future. It is the momentum of past Desmond moving joltingly forward into future Desmond that pushed him into precognitive awareness.
