I just re-watched "Orientation," twice, and I have a new idea about the hatch, and Dharma's research there. I feel this episode is an important part of the show's mythology.
Dharma members, possibly volunteers as we ourselves are in the current ARG, are exposed to high electromagnetic fields for a set duration of time (540 days), but Desmond was exposed to these electromagnet fields longer than Dharma had meant recruits to receive them. We know exposure to high electromagnetic fields causes, not time travel, per se, but some sort of mental "unsticking" in time.
After his highest exposure, Desmond began to see the future, but after leaving the island, Desmond began to see the past. I don't know how having a constant to even things out figures into this theory, but I'll continue anyway...
While the recruits remain on the island they end up with an ability to see the future... Dharma is breeding prophets, not profits. And maybe the beginning of the "nobody can leave this island" view. The "incident" may have been the first realization of people seeing into the future after exposure to the Swan, "originally constructed as a laboratory..."
I think Ms. Hawking may have been the first, or only person, after spending time pushing the button, to leave the island safely, i.e. finding their "constant." Her constant was the guy in the monastery she had her picture taken with. Maybe she even had to turn the donkey wheel at some point?
This theory ends with the idea that Ben did time in the hatch, and therefore can see the future the way Desmond has. That is why he always seemed one step ahead. It also explains why he asked the date when he was off island in Tunisia, fearing he may be skipping through time as Desmond did after leaving the island.
This leads to another theory... one about what happened when the hatch imploded.... but that's a whole n'other theory... and another after that, about "constants," and Penny.... Wow... we really need some new Lost :)
