Hello!
Long time reader, first time contributer :)
Alright, my theory relates to pregnancy on the island, which has been established is impossible, or very rare.
Anyways, this theory came to me while reading 'The Time Travellers Wife,' a brilliant book that also deals with all things time travel. For those of you wishing to read the book spoiler free, this theory may not be for you, as I will be discussing some of the awesome plot twists.
The basic story is this: A man, Henry, is born with a rare genetic sequencing that sees him 'pulled' through time randomly, usually as a result of stress, fatigue or other mental strain. The bulk of the story revolves around Henry's relationship with his wife, Clare, who has to put up with his rare condition.
Anyways, at one point in the story, Henry and Clare decide to try and conceive a child. But she miscarriages over and over, at about the same point in each pregnancy. The doctor they visit (who is studying and attempting to 'cure' Henry), tells them that the baby is actually jumping through time from Clare's womb (having inherited Henry's genetics), and everytime it returns to the present, it causes damage to Clare's uterus and causes her to hemoerrage (sp?). As a result, her immune system turns on the baby and it dies. The doctor warns Henry and Clare that if they continue trying, she will most probaby die. In the end, they successfully give birth to a little girl, who can also time travel.
So how does this relate to Lost? The first thing that struck me was names. The producers of Lost have again and again told us that names are significant. When we first meet Ben, he calls himself Henry. And we know he is obsessed with curing the pregnancy problem on the Island. Secondly, the first pregnant person we encounter on Lost is Clare-- same as the book.
I believe the producers of Lost may have borrowed from this book. And heres how it all ties in:
We know now that time travel is a big underlying theme of the show. And we also know (well, its been hinted) that the Others/Hostiles can manipulate this time travel/jumping or know how it works (Richard visiting baby Locke, some of the Others seeming to appear/disappear at important times).
I believe that it relates to the exotic matter and/or the electromagnitism emitted from the island. We know that extended exposure to this can cause the brain/mind to somehow reconfigure and unstick.
But what effect would these forces have on a developing feotus? Well, perhaps they alter or mutate developing genetic material which causes the babies to 'jump' through time/space, inevitably killing the mother as described in the book. If this is the case, then if those babies survived, they could very well be born with the ability to jump through time and space at will.
And this is where Jacob comes into the picture. What if Jacob is one such baby that survived long enough to be born? Jacobs genetic material could have been mutated by the Islands forces and given him the ability to be completely unstuck in time and space; popping in and out as he desires. Maybe he's seen the future and his 'list' is of those who are needed to make some kind of corrections?
Mrs Hawking could be another of these 'mutated' humans, born on the island with this ability to skip through time. Richard could be another. Maybe at one time, the natives of the island could conceive and give birth freely and heathily, as their bodies had adapted to the islands properties.
With Dharma's intrusion, several of these natives were killed. Ben was left to grapple with the problem of human bodies that were unprepared for the islands effects on their unborn.
Anyways, just an idea :) And it helped me successfully kill about 30mins of time. I'm a baby step closer to season 5!
Thanks for reading!
