Hi all!!
Again i wanted to post something, not a theory per-say, more somehting i head for a while and wanted to point out.
I bet that all of you have been watching closely the Kate-Jack-Sawyer love triangle. So far nothing exciting on that right?
Still i just want to point out that love in the island finds many obstacles in the matters of expression and ending.
Think of it: All the love stories on the island so far have ended in the death of the one of the couple: Shannon, Libby, Jin, Goodwin and the little girl of the Dharma Initiative that seemed to have a mutual crash on young Ben, all of them died tragically.
Could it be that the Island Rules state that no love must exist in it? Why?
One possible reason i can think of (that can be attached to my previous theories) is that love can simply distract someone from his path on the Island which (as i said in my previous theories) is why all the 815's are there for.
Can the failed pregnancies on the Island is the way the Island tells people not to be distracted from their paths, not to fall in love, have a family? Babies= children, children= responsibility, responsibility= distraction.
Another reason i can think of is that the isalnd simply cannot cource correct and kill people as easy while they are attached to each other, thus having a contact to rely on in case of time-travel or another one close to watch over them.
The Island just doesn't want people to be united i think because if they are to improve their lifes, they have to do it by themselves not with help.
The whole LOST story has been quite confusing so far. But i stay in my opinion. The show is about people who struggle to improve their lifes through tough circumstances. The mysteries are inferior, much inferior if you ask me. I mean lets face it. All the survivors we have met have had some sort of a disturbed past, no exceptions. They are on the island for the reason i just mentioned. They may all be there for something else i know. Saving mankind or rescue an ancinet civilization, you name it. But what's more important is the undergoing message of the show, not the plot or the actio, remember that. (Please dont kill me as a traitor to the show, i love LOST, can't wait to see season 5!)
And now we come to my point. If any of you have read cinematic psychology you might have come across the term "Character- Psychologic Model"
This is simply a character in a show that acts and will always act in his/her own particular way so that he/she can portay one small piece of the spectator of the show or sometimes his whole personal psychological identity.
Example: Sawyer will always make a good offensive joke, Ben will always do something mysterious, Jack will always do somthing heroic, Locke will always do something risky.
This happens because the actors need to form a bond with the fanbase of a show so the public can suffer, love, hate with the character at the same time he/she does. Most shows have big casts so many characters can be formed and consequently more and more people can relate to any chatacter they see themselves on.
A huge example of this is Charlie's death on the show. Many of my net-friends and personal aquaintances were devestated somehow by this death event because Charlie was a loveable character overall. It's like some of my friends actually saw themselves die in the show instead of Charlie because they had found many of his character qualities and flaws on themselves too.
In detail, i will take 5 of the most to-be-related-by-a-fan characters to show you how LOST can not only be infectious but instructive also.
LOCKE
Our dear, bald, always on the move friend, Locke is the guy most Lost fans relate themselves to. This happens because Locke has, from day 1, to explored, learned and sought clues for the special place his flight crashed on. He has asked Ben straight one of the most headscratching questions in the show: "What is the smoke monster?"
He is like a fan of the show inside a character! Who of us would not become a Tarzan like Locke in order to survive in a tropical island? Who of us would not go with the Others, given that we would learn all the secrets of the island and not get hurt in the proccess?
Locke is the most popular character in the show because he asks, learns and does stuff we all want him to do. We al wanted to see what was in the hatch and Locke made us happy by going down. We all wanted to know what would happen if the button was not pushed, again Locke swoopes in and makes us happy. He learned more about the Ohters and so did we thanks to him. In general the LOST plot is being unfolded mainly by Locke. Unlike most of the 815's he is not willing to just stay and wait for the rescue planes but do something while being on the island. We, the fans, in the ned we expect from him to answer most of our questions through his adventures. Killing him was a brave move of the producers (although Locke lived like 3 more years in the island after the O6 left so we have a lot of flashback cathing up to do.)
JACK
Either treating wounds or doing heroic stuff all the time in order to rescue the 815's, Jack is one of the most controvercial can-i-relate-to characters of the show. Most people i have talked about this guy have said that they love him and they will be sad if he dies or anything (some of my girl friends actually cried when he got that infection on his surfix-is that how this is spelled?- and had to perform surgery.
Even loveable though, Jack gradually became a distant figure on the lost series due to the fact that he is a natural leader, determined to do one thing: Rescue all the 815's. Not search, not explore, just find a way to get out of the island which he eventually does. This is his main difference towards Locke who most fans count on to unravell the island's mysteries.
Through the show Jack became boring and repeatable because he was not introducing anything new, just the old we-must-return-home strategy and that alienated most of his fans. Locke on the other hand is the ideal survivor, the show's miracle boy.
So Jack is a leader, a rare figure that few people can claim they can relate to. Good leaders are rare.
KATE
She climbs trees, she swims in deep lakes, she surpasses sonic fences, she always wonder in the jungle. She always waits to be rescued or help in an adventure, Kate is a boysih yet sexy woman who stands as a true representative of the female sex on the isalnd. She stands between Locke and Jack. She does survive well in the jungle and she does whatever she can to go back. She is half and half. All girl fans of the show like her. She is loveable, she is smart, she is a fighter, a strong personality. Even though she has not offered much to the story yet she is a choice of many as a character-to-relate-to in the show.
BEN/WIDMORE
These two go together cause they are much alike. Most gyes i have talked to who relate themselves to Ben tend to be extremely smart and have had many many many small adventures in their lifes. Family tragedies, drugs, small thefts, you name it. And they are about 3 of them. Too few are the ones who claim that they relate themselves to Ben or Widmore. Most of them who do are not these 3 i mentioned (because they trully cannot relate to anyone else)like Ben and Widmore in a kind these-dudes-are-ok but no one relates trully to them.
HURLEY
The dude. The guy. The most common type of man among the billions of people in this world, Hurley is what we might describe as: Hey, this could be me! I mean a few pounds lighter but still....
Hurley is the most loveable character in the show. He is actually the only one who has not hurt anyone, physically or mentally. He is helpful, he is normal, he could just be anyone of us. Hurley is the most can-i-relate-to character in LOST if you ask me.
His actions on the island are the most normal. When he sees or hears something bad he runs for his life. When he has a bad hunch he stops and turns back. When his friends are in danger he does whatever he can to help. Like any of us would do. He is not a survivor, he is not a leader. He doesnt say any jokes he just happens to be there. A friend, a buddy a true constant.
The overall image states that LOST has so many characters that almost anyone can watch it and feel like he is actually on the isalnd himself, living amongst the 815's.
This is a routine strategy for tv shows. Shows that go like 6 or 10 seasons long like LOST or F.R.I.E.N.D.S , must have a cast that can keep the audience interested even if by sheer can-i-relate-to-this-guy action.
(My can-i-relate-to-character is Locke if anyone wonders)
There is more to this though but for now i hope i provided enough info until i write again about this. Thanks for reading me!!!!!
