I’m of the opinion that the final season of lost will be a replay of the first 5 seasons. Here’s why.
First of all, when the 6 left the island we know that “bad things happened.” Up to this point on the island, as far as we can tell, nothing positive has occurred. Most all decisions have brought about negative outcomes. Many people have died, for various reasons. Eko, Libby, Ana Lucia, Ethan, Charlie, Boone, Locke, possibly Jin, etc… Relationships have been established and broken and established again (the dreaded love triangle.) Hope in general has been dashed and beaten at every turn. The raft was burnt to a crisp. The second raft was sunk. Benry turned out to be a liar. Jack never got off the island because Locke blew up the submarine. The freighter folk did not come to save the Losties. And when the 6 finally got off the island, it was a jumbled mess that led to (what appeared to be) more deaths and loss. Up to this point, it seems that nothing’s been done right. No good decisions have been made.
So, back to the Pilot episode. It begins with the familiar “woosh” that all flashbacks begin with. Could it be that the Oceanic 6 must now come back to the island at the exact moment of the crash? To correct all their wrong decisions, perhaps they have to start over, again, with a “clean slate”—a “tabula rasa”. I believe the opening scene of season 6 will be the same as the opening scene of the Pilot.
In this second go round, Boone won’t die. Charlie won’t die. Eko won’t die. Ana Lucia won’t die. If been turns out to be the bad guy, they won’t ever let him out of that locked room. They won’t try to run the raft off the island, so Walt won’t be taken. Jack won’t perform surgery on Ben. They won’t trust Juliet. They won’t trust the freighter folk, and Claire won’t die—she’ll be able to raise Aaron on her own. Thus, they won’t ever leave the island on the helicopter, and the “Bad Things” that happened won’t ever come to pass—whatever they may be.
The conflict may arise in that they will have to fight "destiny" to change their choices. People like Mrs. Hawking and Christian Shepherd (who appeared to have something to do with destiny when he appeared to Michael before he died) will be pushing the Losties to continue making the same choices they have in the past. But they will have to realize how to defeat their inevitable destinies, and find a way to literally rewrite history and right their wrongs, finding their redemption in the process.
There are many questions this does not address, like Widmore, Dharma, etc. But I believe they'll play into this grand scheme somehow. Many more things will be answered over the next two years, but I’m of the opinion that the final season will be focused on the Losties correcting all the wrong choices they’ve made up to this point, and in so doing, finding their true redemption.
