I was watching the episode last night that first introduced Adam and Eve in the caves. The characters present were Jack, Kate, Locke, and Charlie, with Jack having led them to the caves after having discovered water there. But Jack and Kate didn't want Locke to see the bodies, but when he did he dubbed them Adam and Eve and suggested that they were important.
I guess I'll just say that what I took from that is that Jack and Kate are likely Adam and Eve if in fact any of the current characters are. Kate was reluctant to move to the caves initially, but Jack was convinced that they were the best place to survive on the island.
Also the two of the represent the idea of light and dark as good as any male female pair of characters on the island and they are ideally the "it" couple on the island.
That's not to mention that while we've seen glimpses of what most charaters "purpose" on the island is, Jack and Kate's ultimate purpose still remains a mystery. But by calling these two mysterious dead people in the caves Adam and Eve, we get a sense that they are important, and when you consider that both Jack and Kate now have strong connections to Aaron (another mysterious character) it's seemingly likely that they will have a heavy influence in the importance Aaron supposedly has.
Aaron undoubtedly will have a significant role. Ever since the beginning of the series, we've kept Aaron in our peripheral, and as the show has gone on we've seen his importance become more and more significant.
It seems probable to me that Jack and Kate will wind up with him back on the island where he will fullfill whatever destiny he's supposed to, and Jack and Kate will be left to fend for themselves, possible becoming Adam and Eve.
Clearly there are other things that could happen, but we do know that Aaron is a significant link between Jack and Kate, we know that they are the predominant couple on the show, and we know they are coming back to the island. I'm not so convinced that time travel is what's going on here, but I can't think of another couple who would so snuggly fit into the Adam and Eve role. I suppose it could be brand new characters all together, but if it had to be a pair of losties, I'm going with Jack and Kate.
