In season three we were introduced to the Flame, and the Looking Glass both DHARMA stations, both for communications. We have already seen the flame in action talking to to outside world, but we have yet to see the true potential of the Looking Glass.
Like the LOST producers like to do, the Looking Glass was a hint of future events, another one of those "we knew what was happening WAY back then situations"
In the S3 finale it served as a catalyst for events to take place, but it was never destroyed
over to Alice in Wonderland speculation, the looking glass showed another world, different from her own, and so it will in LOST
finally to my theory
THE LOOKING GLASS IS A 'TIME MACHINE' OF SORTS WHICH CAN SEE AND COMMUNICATE TO THE PAST/FUTURE

i think in the season five finale the Looking Glass will play an intricate role
in bringing together the oceanic 6 (+ tag alongers)
as well as the islanders back to one place and time
