I have this strange theory that peoples actions on the island, especially Locke's are to change the state of the island so that in the past it doesn't work in the same way as was planned.
Two parties : On one hand - original inhabitants and their descendants who want to hide the island from the outside world and exist happily on their own in their little time swimming Utopia, observing and maybe even protecting the cataclysm of the planet itself. On the other hand - megalomaniac business men who want to use the island as a tool to manipulate past and future outcomes for their very own purposes, for power, to make money, under the guise of a preservist movement trying to stop the world from destroying itself which I believe is a complete hoodwinking fabrication, a smokescreen for their actual intentions.
Original inhabitants are wondering why nobody can give birth on their island .. is this because it has been moved in time to the future so the people who are having the children give birth before they even conceived in the first place creating some abortion paradox? Did some scientists somehow find the island and created a similar machine to the Hadron Collider and used the underlying geo-magnetic-thermal energies to power this machine and tore it from its comfortable place in the time space continuum?
Example 1)
The purge, as we are to believe was the release of poisonous gas via the Tempest station. As we know this wiped out the members of the Dharma Initiative in one fell swoop. Now when Charlotte and Faraday decided to disarm the Tempest Station what if they did this under instruction by someone who had the foresight to know that if the island was moved to the past, a de-activated Tempest would render the purge useless - therefore allowing the Dharma Initiative to survive and carry on its work!?
Example 2)
Is Locke an unknowing descenant or constantly re-incarnated form of himself forever existing because he has to fulfil his destiny in restoring the island to its original state?
All of these strange manipulative actions by a 'guiding hand' in real time, who I believe is a character we have not yet met, are polarising Bens intentions. Ben wants to do it one way, and jumps through time to pre-empt the protagonists moves and almost stops them by changing the past or future so these events dont even come to fruition - by possibly killing the link in the chain of people who he knows will create a paradox to his ideals.
First of all, original island inhabitants and their descendants wish to preserve and protect the island from manipulation from the outside world, because they know the true power of the time changing island could in essence destroy the fabric of time and space itself.
I believe Charles never wanted Desmond to marry Penelope because he knew that Desmond could never be free of his time jumping frenzy and would never be able to be with her consistently creating immense upset for poor Pen.
I'm still in my own mind wondering whether flashbacks are actually characters jumping back in time and unconsciously changing their own past to bring themselves to the island. As the grey haired woman said which could be a complete lie, the universe will always course correct itself, so no matter how you try to change your own destiny your path is mapped like the branches of a tree meandering down and all leading to an ultimate end, and if you ever should try to digress from your 'path' then you will be sorely disappointed.
I still think the key points to the whole show are :
Desmond going out to murder Kelvin and forgetting to press the button, it unstuck the island in its time, I believe every time the button was pressed it returned the island back a specific amount in time so it would never catch up with the present, allowing the oustide world to see it and enter. When Desmond forgot it moved to the present and pulled the passenger Plane out of the sky. The island was then in present time, briefly.
Locke stopping the button from being pressed caused the island to enter present time. Turning the failsafe key stopped island moving back and stuck it in a forwards motion moving it slowly towards the future passing through the present timeline, allowing freighter folk to identify and access the island.
Island was at one point in the future compared to the outside world for when the doctor arrived a few days before being killed. This may have allowed certain anomalies to occurr that we dont yet know about, maybe even allowing Widmore to manipulate the islands past itself because he could pre-empt Bens movements now the timeline had been shifted in his favour.
It sounds like a lot of waffle but I seem to have this grand idea that is almost formed with a few missing pieces of the jigsaw yet to be put in place.
