So just a short theory, not epic or very big, and I'm sorry if someone has mentioned this earlier.
So the basic concept is that, even before the island moved (i.e. at then end of season 4) the island was on a different timeline, which I'm going to assume right now was the future, OR, that once you leave the island you go backwards in time (i.e. maybe the island itself ISN'T on a different timeline, but that leaving the island causes the person who leaves to shift in time). Maybe it depends on the bearing which you leave/enter on (which may explain the difference in 325/305).
So if Michael went into the past, the reason why he couldn't kill himself, or why the "island wouldn't let him die" was really to say, that there is a Michael alive in the future(i.e. really the present island), and therefore he couldn't kill himself because it would create a paradox. Thus he could only kill himself once he came close to island/relatively entered the "island-zone"
If we follow that, maybe that is why ben couldn't let anyone leave the island. Aside from the issue of them telling anyone about the island, maybe if they left the island, they would, in a sense be time traveling, and thus cause a crack in the time-continium.
maybe why thats why Richard Alpert is ageless? he time traveled way into the future or he is from way into the future or in a different timeline, and thus his body wont age until the island/real world catches up with that time. maybe.
