Let me just start this off by saying that this is my first theory, so if it isn't terribly eloquent or coherent I do apologize.
Okay, so we've been told many times in the past that the naming of characters is very important. While digging around for info on Matthew Abaddon, I noticed something about the definition of his name.
"Abaddon/Appolyon/Apollo - The name is rendered in Greek as Apollyon and described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. "In appearance the locusts were like horses arrayed for battle; on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, their hair like women's hair, and their teeth like lions' teeth; they had scales like iron breastplates, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. They have tails like scorpions, and stings, and their power of hurting men for five months lies in their tails. They have as king over them, the angel of the Abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon." (Revelation 9:7-11)"
Further passages from Revelation reveal his deeper connection to these locusts.
"And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key of the shaft of the bottomless pit; he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft." (Revelation 9:1-2)
"Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth; they were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green growth or any tree, but only those of mankind who have not the seal of God upon their foreheads; they were allowed to torture them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torture was like the torture of a scorpion, when it stings a man. And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death will fly from them." (Revelation 9:3-6)
Now it could just be me, but that all seems to be indicative of good old Smokey. We know that it travels the island in the Cerberus vents, which could be seen as a type of bottomless shaft, and it has, on more than one occasion, acted as judge, jury, and executioner for inhabitants of the island. Eko especially seems to fit the bill of one being tortured for not having God's seal, as he failed to repent to Smokey when it was in the guise of his brother Yemi.
Perhaps Abaddon was one of the original inhabitants of the island and each of them had a specific role within their society, with Abaddon's being related to the control/use of Smokey.
