I think The Whispers could be closely related to what has been called the monster (audio to it's normal video), and also to The Temple and the Four-Toed Statue, which I think could be a statue of Smokey; like The Orchid, The Temple could be a synergy of things built by the old civilization that existed on The Island in peace for thousands of years (before the Black Rock came) and the things that The DHARMA Initiative built (know any characters with a Construction business?).
The DHARMA Initiative must have studied the thing they called Cerberus, indeed it would seem they built their homes right on top of it's (again, the new atop the old, The DI standing on the shoulders of giants), and clearly they made progress, constucting Cerberus Vents around The Island and surrounding New Otherton with an effective defence in the Sonic Fence.
But I think as much as they studied it, it studied them, and what we saw it do to Eko and the visions he experience are, IMO, the key to partly understanding what it is and what it does, if not where it came from.
I think some of the Visions people have on (and off) The Island are like The Whispers in that both can be manifestations of a persons memories, thought's, feelings and emotions (very much like Solaris, hence the recent Stanisław Lem nod noticed by Black Lotus); when The Others captured Jack, Kate, Sawyer & Hurley, they betrayed a part of Jack's plan...
"Elizabeth"
...but of course at that time The Others didn't know who or what Elizabeth was, Ben didn't know about Desmond's boat, and I doubt Cerberus, once revered as a god by The Island's original inhabitants and now reduced to a security system for fools attempting to change the future, would be too eager to tell them.
Because of it's ability to reflect or project people's thoughts I think The DHARMA Initiative would have called it's station The Mirror or The Gate or ...
The Door.
