I've been thinking ever since the idea came about with time travel (and even more since reading what the writers said about "What is dead?"), that the entire show relates to the 4th dimension and above (5th, 6th, etc.) After learning a more simplistic way of looking at it (this may help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkxieS-6WuA), they can be described as "alternate" times. If one does time travel, not only are they creating/experiencing an alternate timeline, but the original timeline is not affected (things can only be influenced with prior knowledge of another time).
Picture lines coming out of a constant straight line to signify alternate timelines. Each numbered dimension above the fourth would be explained by more lines emerging from the already alternate ones protruding from the original.
Also, consider the fact that a second dimensional being (one that is flat) cannot perceive a 3d being because it is beyond their existence. So, this could very well explain the Black Smoke: A fourth dimensional being that seems to "course correct," perhaps in an attempt to keep the "original" timeline "in sync" with the alternate.
So, if this is the scenario in which the world of Lost is set (and maybe the same for ours too. Who knows?), my theory is that the Island is in a loop. It could have been started by Ben, Dharma, the original inhabitants, I don't know. I think it's impossible at this point in the show to even make a distinction between who is bad and who is good (Ben/Widmore, Jacob/Christian, etc., and yes I think its perfectly possible for Jacob to be revealed as a bad guy in the future, although I doubt it), or if it even should be in a loop.
Here's a head scratcher: what if the island itself is a fourth dimensional location??
This whole theory would bring about the question of Widmore's intentions being not all bad if he has knowledge that killing everyone is not necessarily REALLY killing them, but instead "resetting" them to a previous point in their life (the alternate "line" retracting back to the original), thus Ben would be seen as still manipulating everyone to try and keep his position of power. But, I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself (looks like it might be too late for that lol) because it could go in the total opposite direction. I'm just mad we gotta wait til January! ARG!
Either way, it is reasonable to assume that the show may end with some(one) reliving what has already happened. As for the island itself, it is obvious that it is a very special place that has been worshipped since quite possibly the dawn of time (hieroglyphs that are from different cultures around the world, four-toed statues, etc.). How people coexist with it is the big question. Accept the island and it may free you of your past (Locke, Charlie, Boone, Rose, etc.) and may even give you a chance to experience and gain "nirvana" where all those alternate lines and incarnations become clear as one and you achieve insight. Reject it or screw with its unique properties and that will obviously result in a pillar of black smoke killing you, or a number of "hostiles" releasing poison gas nearby and wiping you out along with your entire scientific team =P
