I am reminded of an Onion.
An Onion, as a term used by the intelligence community, refers to the many layers of secrets that hide secrets upon secrets. But, each layer pealed back leads to just another layer. Even the center of an onion is just a layer, no seed, no focal point.
Is it possible that all the layers of secrecy in Lost, all the hatches that hide other... hatches, may have no distinct link to any central secret? Oh jeez, break out the linen and adhering tape!
Maybe we have a conglomeration of secret projects that happen to exist in a top secret location that just happens to be an island. Sure, we can move the entire island. But, thats just the way of it.
The individual characters seem to be attached to individual projects. Hurley, for example, is attached to the numbers, most notably connected to the Swan hatch. Sure, he may have some cross attachment to other influences, but that may be due to just his proximity to these other experiments on the island. Something in his personality makes him to susceptible to certain influences.
What I am saying is that there may be no all-encompassing influence, no secret above all other secrets that compels everyone to share a like fate. Have you ever seen The Incredible Shrinking Woman? Lily Tomlin has an accident with a large number of household chemicals unexpectedly mixed together. Of course, each chemical is tested in the labs for relative safety, but no one knows what will happen when all these chemicals are mixed together in varied proportions. In the movie it causes Tomlin to shrink.
Is it possible that an unexpected mix of experiments cross bred a reaction, which caused an effect beyond the separateness of the Onion layers? The island and people aren't shrinking. But, they certainly are being manipulated and mutated by the effects of something, perhaps a concoction of influences.
As a scientist how do you unravel such a mixed bag? There are too many variables, too many values.
Time reversal may be the only way to dis-ravel what can't be unraveled by orthodox means. It may even be aligned with Universe self-correction and separate from the politics of Ben & Widmore.
Just something to think about... as if I don't give you enough already.
Mwahaha!
