okay so to start of before i get into it, this is not a theory for how the whole island can seemingly vanish into thin air in one big flash of light. Instead this is really a theory on how people (I.E. Ben) can manipulate events and how they (Ben) can use the Island and it's 'rules' to achieve those results.
So with that said here is my theory, whilst recently watching 'Lock down', the episode where lock and Ben become locked inside the hatch by the blast doors, i started thinking, as you do about the show. At one point in this episode Lock needs Ben's help with lifting up the blast doors but before Ben agrees to help he makes Lock promise to protect him, no matter what...'I'm going to need your word, that you'll protect me, no matter what'. I'm not sure why but i suddenly thought of all the future episodes where lock has come to Ben's rescue, and succeeded in protecting him no matter what. e.g. the knife in the back of Naomi.
I think that some how the rules of the island in term of what you can/can't do dictate that if you make a promise then you have to keep it and although that sounds very basic it could explain a whole load of other events on and off the island where we have seen characters completely turn on their beliefs to help Ben. e.g. Sayid in the flash forwards.
I know this could use some edits and a lot more thought and research but i think it stands up when we look back over the show and try to figure out why all these people are helping Ben, it's because the island wont allow them to go back on their promise.
