Hey, this is something that first occurred to me when I rewatched Cabin Fever right after it aired, but I never bothered to say anything about it until I remembered it today.
So first the background info: After the episode, there had been speculation on whether the island was going to move in time or not, and clearly, even if it has, we don't fully understand the logistics of it. We also saw Locke becoming the new Ben, and as we saw at the end of the season, he is eventually the new leader of the Others.
Now keeping that in mind, check out this dialogue between Ben and Hurley at the Dharma pit:
Ben: I should have realized at the time that it was pointless, but I really wasn't thinking clearly.
Hurley: Is that why you killed all these people too?
Ben: I didn't kill them.
Hurley: Well if the Others didn't wipe out the Dharma Initiative-
Ben: They did wipe them out, Hugo. But it wasn't my decision.
Hurley: Whose was it?
Ben: Their leader's.
Hurley: But I thought you were their leader...
Ben: Not always.
Doesn't that sound like...just maybe...the "leader" Ben is talking about could be...Locke??? That's why he should have known it was pointless to fight it, because he'd already seen a later Locke leading the Others, so he knows Locke will end up leading them. Plus it just seemed strange to me, the way Ben left it at "their leader." And I could definitely see Locke doing that. Locke is an island purist, and the Initiative was a threat to that.
Of course this may not be the case. But something about the way Ben neglected to be more specific convinced me that he was talking about Locke.
What do you think?
