Okay, we all have theories and tons of them are wrong. but every now and then theres one that is correct. i think i have found it. i dont know if this has been said or not so tell me if it has.
I think that Widmore was either the leader of the others before ben was. he in turn had to move the island which made him butt heads with Linus.
Widmore stated that the island was his and it always was. this can either leave anyone to choose whether he was the x leader of the others or the owner of the dharma initiative. that might also be why he is mad at ben because he killed off every one of his workers.
i also think that the only reason widmores company created the race around the world is to find the island. and he must have had a tracker of some sort on each one of the contestants and when desmond found the island he began a trial and error process to figure out the coordinates.
