I have thought about this ever since season 1. i think the story of Pandoras box plays a big part in the overall theme of the story.
it all started when hurley played the numbers in the lotterty, he went to lenny and when he told him lenny said "YOU OPENED THE BOX!!" this could be pandoras box which let out all the evil, or in this case, bad luck. but as most of us know at the end of the story only one thing was left in the box, thats hope. hope is without a doubt the number one theme. Hurleys dad told him repeatedly he needed a little hope. and thats what eventually brings back the curse or evil back into the box. hurley had hope that the curse would be lifted on the Evil Knievel stunt going down the valley in the bus.
AND!!! john locke, worked at a box company. coincidence?? and not to mention the joke so to speak that goes on between ben and locke about the magic box. when john locke opened the box everything he imagined everything he ever wanted to be in there, when he opened the box. there it would be.
there are many connections between lost and the story that may have been overlooked. when tom stated "since the dawn of our species, mankind has been blessed with curiosity." curiosity is what led pandora to open the box in the first place.
all in all its probably just another theory thought up by someone with way too much time on their hands, that being ME! but its kind of neat to think about
