It could be possible that one of the biggest themes of Lost has always been the idea of Reincarnation. Even since way back in Season 1 the writers have been setting up a plot twist that wont begin to really make sense until the climax of the show (Season 6). I think it's very possible that many of the characters on the show are in fact reincarnations of former Island Natives. Take for instance John Locke, after "Cabin Fever" there's no denying that he is the reincarnated savior of the island. The test with the sand, the comic book, the knife, and the book of laws gave Alpert the impression that John was the wrong boy, when in fact John was just not ready yet.
The second most obvious reincarnation would be Charlie. When it came time for Charlie to sacrifice himself to save Claire he discovered that the code to the Looking Glass was programmed by a musician... coincidence... I think not. Whoever programmed that hatch was important, and the true meaning behind the Looking Glass is very hazy. I think we will learn more in Season 5. Charlie is not out of the picture.
Jack is very much like his father, but also very different. Jack could be a reincarnation of Christian but this one I am not totally sure about. It would make sense being that they are both doctors, who eventually develop drinking problems that in one way or another lead them back to the island (at least I hope Jack makes it back). This is on the assumption that Christian has been to the island before Sept 14. 2004... but I think we all know that's very much the story.
All throughout the story people have been mentioning things like "See you in another life brotha" or "I was an artist in a previous life" even Nadia made mention of seeing Sayid in "the next life"... 3 seasons before her eventual death.
The orchid symbols plays into this theory a bit as well. It reminded me of Ms. Hawking's pin from season 3. A cycle. Ever repeating and ending where it begins.
