I was on the side that Jin may still be alive but I had a thought that has changed my mind. That is that I never thought that Jin had ever served any real purpose, and then I wondered what his purpose was.
It's to Sun. Sun was a weak character in flashbacks. A very girly girl who was born to a very rich and powerful father, and she fell in love with another week person who was at the bottom of the corporate ladder. But Jin moved his way up and quickly gave Sun a connection she had never had to her father's power when he began working for him.
That caused a lot of strife in their marriage, and because of that Sun learned the strength it took to eventually challenge her father. But she needed more strength, and that came when was finally able to open up to Jin and love him again. The final straw came though at his death, when all of the strength she had built up through these experiences came welling up and she chose to direct them in a takeover of her fathers company so that she could use that power to manipulate events with Widmore and the island.
So in short Sun is the important character, and not Jin. He's truly never meant much to the island, but has meant a great deal to Jin. All of his actions from taking the job with Paik, to marrying Sun, to abusing her, to leaving her, to accepting her lies and cheating, to his death have all served to build her character.
So therefore I have come to believe that he is actually dead, and Sun will go on to make a true difference.
