I got to thinking about how the various characters on 815 got to the island and it occurred to me that all of these people were on that plane to accomplish something. Some went to Australia to do it and failed, some were going to LA to accomplish their goals but never got there. However, when you look at it, everyone accomplish what there were trying to do, it just got done on the island or because of the island.
Jack: Bring Christian Home
Kate: Escape prosecution for killing father
Locke: Go on walkabout/fulfill destiny
Sawyer: Kill the real Sawyer
Jin: Save his marriage
Sun: Escape father
Hugo: Find the source and meaning of the numbers (still working on meaning)
Sayid: To find Nadia
Claire: To get unborn son to adoptive family
Bernard & Rose: To cure Rose’s cancer
I have not though a lot about the people that have died on the island. Also I have not put a lot of thought to the other people on the Island, but I did note that Desmond got what he was on a mission for through the island. He won back Penny’s heart.
This all may tie into the statement that the island is a place “where miracles happen.” Perhaps the box that Ben referred to is in fact the island itself. Another curious potential tie-in is Abaddon’s comments on his walkabout. It is now obvious to me that Locke’s walkabout was never intended to be in Australia but on the island. He hunts bore and lives off the land. Perhaps Abaddon is using his walkabout as a metaphor for his trip to the island.
