This is a theory I've been developing in my head for sometime now, and it seems as though this is the way lost is heading. My theory is that this island has been inhabited before, by the ancestors of these original Losties.
It's a technique that has been used before, but we continually see almost every other episode how these characters are all connected and intertwined in each other's lives right now. My theory is originally the inhabitants of the island we're able to live, and I think that's where the four toed statue came from, they had built it. I think that they escaped the island, and the island has been working to get them back.
Women and children:
I think the problem with women having children on the island started when the Dharma Initiative came to the Island. Maybe it's a punishment of Jacob, or just effect of radiation on the Island, but regardless, I think that is when it happened. I think Ben and Annie were close, and she died during her pregnancy, causing him to be obsessed. I believe Juliet will complete her mission though, I think that will be her legacy and swan song, should she not live until the end of the series.
Getting back to the Island:
My other theory about Lost is that to get there, you have to have a dead body, as a sacrifice. I think that was the key of way the 815ers landed there originally in the first place, was because Christian Shepard was the key, the dead body to sacrifice and now is the spokesperson for Jacob. I think now that Locke really may have committed suicide so that they would have to take him back to the Island, and once they make it he will take the place of Christian Shepard and remain on the island.
