I have a theory that there is a lot more tension within the society of the Others than we think. There is a definite struggle for leadership within the group and I don't think Ben is on the same page as the elder Others. It's been hinted at that there is a group of people from the island who have been there much longer than Ben and his followers. I think these people are probably the ones who devised the purge. Richard Alpert is most likely one of these people. In "Stranger in a Strange Land" we meet Isabel a.k.a. the Sheriff. Her visit is short but her level of authority is obviously very respected. Since that episode we haven't seen the sheriff... why you may ask? Because she left to return to The Other Others. It seems when Jack and Juliet left the Hydra Island with Ben the group split up, Isabel probably went back to The Temple to let the Other Others know how Juliet's Tat went down... or maybe she told them ! about Jack's...
