Watching Lost over these past four seasons the Island has truly become a character, how did all these ancient, mystical properties come to exist in once place. We know there is an ancient civilization (four toed statue), time traveling properties, electromagnetism of uncharted quantities and power. What we don't know is how or why they got there. Well here's my two cents.
The island is the remains of the Lost city of Atlantis. It all makes sense when you think it through, the city of Atlantis was considered far advanced for its time using what could have been considered space age technologies. SO how to get space age technologies, yes that's right aliens arrived. The electro magnetism could be the spaceships generator and as Ben descends to the "Frozen Donkey Wheel" we see unknown carvings in the room. In addition, when the island disappeared it formed a perfect concentric circle as if it were in the shape of a UFO.
So what happened to the alien society? It could be a number of things:Mutiny, died off, or maybe their descendents are still on the island. The geography of Atlantis is intersting as well, people are never really sure where it's been, Mediterranean, Bermuda Triangle near the Bahamas. The truth is the island could have moved other times and maybe it was in one of these moves that the Black Rock was absorbed and landed in the middle of the island instead of being in the middle of the water where they thought they were.
Also the island being Atlantis makes sense on other levels, it would explain the secrecy of the Dharma group and the tremendous interest by scientists in all different fields trying to understand the mysterious properties of the island. The effect of the electormagnetism on pregnant women is also easily explained as there have been experiments in the field on lab mice which shows that electromagnetism adversely affects pregnant mice.
Finally the name of the series "Lost" fits in perfectly with the idea that this ancient civilization Atlantis has been lost for centuries and is now being rediscoverd by this group of seemingly random people who all considered themselves lost in their lives until finding purpose on the island.
Well that's the theory look forward to your responses. Thanks.
