“The Man who brought me here….who brought all by people here…is magnificent man.” - Mikhail
“He is a smart man, a great man, but not a forgiving man.” - Ben

Jacob’s History
Who is this mysterious, cabin dwelling, flickering man? The operative question may not be who, but what?
To start, let’s go back long before the 815ers arrived:
“The Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth England on March 22, 1845 on a trading mission to Africa.”
I’m certain the island’s “original inhabitants” and possibly Jacob (As the captain) were originally members of the Black Rock. Being the original inhabitants of this mystical island, they began to exhibit extraordinary abilities. Some never aged. But no one was more in tune with the island than Jacob. Jacob became the leader of this small civilization. During the 1960’s the Dharma initiative arrived at the island bringing technology to island, building communities and stations, and performing “silly experiments.”
“They couldn’t even coexist with the island’s original inhabitants.”
Jacob was captured by the Dharma Initiative and taken deep into the bowels of the island and forced to turn the frozen wheel. But Jacob, being the island’s true chosen one, did not completely vanish from the island….only in his physical state. Jacob was forced to manifest himself as those who have died and to communicate through messengers who were also dead.
The “hostiles” were without a leader and times appeared very grim for the island’s original inhabitants. Richard Alpert emerged as the new leader and decided extreme measures had to be taken. Lacking the necessary resources to execute a purge, he realized that an “insider” would be needed to take out Dharma from within. The “Others” await a proverbial “Chosen One” and mistake Benjamin Linus for him. But in Benjamin Linus, Richard gets more than he bargained for. Not only is Ben a disgruntled DI member, Ben can communicate with the dead, even Jacob. After carrying out the purge, Ben is welcomed with open arms but the “others” and allowed to lead. Jacob manifests himself in a cabin built by Horrace Goodspeed and marked by a surrounding circle of ash so Ben has an easier time communicating with him. But Ben is not supposed to be the leader….a man by the name of John Locke is. When it becomes apparent that the island must once again be moved to hide it! from men such as Charles Widmore and Alver Hanso, it is Ben’s job to do it, allowing the true leader to take his place. Ben is unwilling to accept this burden and uses the “Einstein’s of the bear community” to do it. (This is the reason the polar bear is found in Tunisia) However moving the island does not come with out repercussions. A pregnancy problem follows. The volcano is disrupted. Jacob, and the cabin become unstuck in time. The island and the cabin are Jacob’s Constant. And because of Ben’s lack of obedience, Jacob refuses to communicate with Ben any more.
The Name Jacob
“Jacob’s name is significant.” - Damon and Carlton
“That island’s mine Benjamin, always was, it will be again.” - Charles Widmore
In the Bible Jacob tricks his brother Esau out of his birth right and their father’s blessing.
Widmore is the proverbial Esau of Lost, as he was a leader of Dharma and was “tricked” out of possession of the island.
The Cabin Scenes
Let’s go back to the very first time we were introduced to Jacob, in Ben and Locke‘s journey in The Man Behind The Curtain:
1.
Before Locke and Ben enter the cabin, Ben lights the lantern, someone screams in the distance and Locke looks around, touches his gun-Someone will say its the wind, trust me turn the volume up its 100% someone screaming, its no coincidence Locke turns around after and grabs his gun.
***The scream comes as soon as Ben lights the lantern. From the "Constant" we saw that something triggers the time flashes. I think the lighting of the lantern causes a time flash within the circle of ash and the scream is Jacob's.
2.
Jacob flips out because Locke is about to tell Ben what he said, not because of the flash light. I counted 3.5 seconds Locke is shining his flashlight before everything goes crazy.
***When everything starts shaking it could be the island moving in the flash sequence.
***When the doctor on the freighter shines light into Desmond's eyes he experience another time flash. It's possible that the light Locke shines causes more time effects within the cabin
3.
While in the cabin the lantern shatters and sets fire. After Ben leaves, the fire is out and the lantern still intact.
***The flash is over everything returns to normal.
4. This was Jacob’s rather “unusual welcome” I think this was Jacob taking on his true form but could only manage to do it for a few moments. Jacob’s dress attire looking that of an old English sailor.
5. Jacob looks remarkably similar to Locke.
In the Beginning of the End, Hurley finds Jacob’s Cabin. The Cabin is different looking now as it now has a porch, unlike in the Man Behind The Curtain. Hurley looks in to see Christian rocking in Jacobs chair and suddenly Jacob looks at Hurley, scaring Hurley away. Once again, Jacob looks remarkably similar to Locke.
What happens next is startling. The cabin moves and the door begins opening. Hurley closes his eyes and falls down, upon opening them he sees John Locke staring down at him.
Cabin Fever gives us a third visit to the cabin, this time the cabin is much larger than the previous times. Locke enters to find Christian, speaking on Jacob’s behalf as Jacob is absent. I’m willing to bet that Ben has never seen or met the “true” Jacob, only messengers of him, such as Christian.
1. So where is Jacob?
- Jacob has left the island and manifested himself as Jeremy Bentham to convince the o6 to return. But as Jacob is unstuck in time and away from his constant, his manifestation eventually dies.
The Undead
There are two most likely explanations to the “undead” people
1. It is Jacob manifesting himself
2. Jacob is sending these “undead” as messangers
I’m going to go with the latter for the following reason:
- They still exhibit traits and the personality of their respective characters.
So who or what is this magnificent, cabin dwelling, appearance changing, flickering man?
I think Season 5 will shed some light.
