Hopefully that’s got your attention.
To sidetrack quickly, we’ve seen over the course of four seasons how people who die on the island aren’t quite dead. Season 4 has done more than any to challenge our opinion of what death actually means on the island. It seems dead can be re-animated in a number of ways – via dreams and visions and even smokey himself – to interact with the island folk (via Christian, Charlie, Yemi, Claire? etc).
A recent theory proposed that these undead people were re-animated to do the Island’s bidding: Christian helping Locke, Charlie trying to get Hurley to go back/sending a message to Jack etc. Another theory proposed that only people who weren’t buried could come back, which so far seems to be true.
To tie these together and to get back to the title of my theory, many of us asked “why didn’t smokey kill those f***ers from the freighter?” in ‘The Shape of Things to Come’. And here lies the answer – if indeed the Island uses undead people to do its bidding, it probably doesn’t need a bunch of gun toting morons to help out. Would a vision of Keamy for example inspire Locke to go and move the island? – of course not! Hence smoky via Ben/the Island inflicted only certain damage on his victims so they would die off the island – Keamy retreats and takes his injured men back to the boat.
If you’re buying into this, an interesting implication might be the state of affairs between Ben and Widmore – Ben might already be dead for all we know, hence Widmore can’t kill him. This could also explain Richard’s ageless complexion and Mikhail’s immortality.
Also, an interesting question would be: who do the bodies of Adam and Eve belong to and are they being re-animated by the island? Do they belong to prominent Others like Jacob/Richard/Bea Klugh – one of them is definitely female after all...
What do you think?
