Since the beginning of the series, one of the main underlying questions has always been "Where are we...?" Since Charlie's words in the pilot episode, there have been endless speculations from fans. The prominent theory has always been that the island is hidden somewhere in the vastness of the pacific ocean. This would certainly make sense with the tropical climate and the fact that many official press releases, recaps and sources close to the show have more or less confirmed this fact. However, I am unconvinced and many clues have arose in the show which could well support my theory that the island is "not quite in the pacific".
So where is the island? I believe that the island is no where on our earth, it is within it... The Hollow Earth theory has been around since the early 1800's. In 1818 a man called John Cleves Symmes proposed that the Earth consisted of a hollow shell, in which another world existed. More recent writings on the subject have expanded upon this idea claiming that this hidden world, often called Agarttha, is a magical realm inhabited by a society of underground dwellers. Its capital city of Shamballa has many names in different religions... Forbidden Land, the Land of Radiant Spirits, the Land of the Living Gods and the Land of Wonders. Hindus have known it as Aryavartha, literally : The Land or Realm of The Aryans; the Land of the Noble/Worthy Ones. It is also proposed that this land was originally involved with alien beings.

Does any of this sound familiar...? A land of wonders (visions, healing properties), a land of radiant spirits (ghosts, whispers), a land of gods (the monster??), a land of noble/worthy ones (good/bad people). Also, I believe that the direction in which the show is going is leading to a revelation that the island was somehow involved with alien beings which could well be the cause of many of its mysterious properties; healing, monsters. However, only time will tell with this theory... maybe a mystery for seasons 5 and 6???
So the island is in hollow earth, but how do people come and go into the real world? Well, the hollow earth theory also claims that there are a number of openings leading into hollow earth at points around the world. Does this sound familiar?? It has already been confirmed that there are a number of vile vortices around the world of lost... in the pacific and in Tunisia for example, explaining how Oceanic 815 and Eko's drug smuggler plane came to arrive at hollow earth. We have also recently seen Ben and a polar bear arrive with no tracks or means of travel in the middle of the Sahara desert.
Furthermore, the hollow earth theory claims that there are two main openings at the north and south poles of the earth... and this is what enforces my theory of hollow earth more than other theories as to the whereabouts of the island. Throughout the series I believe the writers have been preparing us for the shocking and unexpected revelation that the island is at the center of the earth and that one may come and go via these openings at the poles. And as the finale of its fourth season approaches more and more clues have been given.
The first came about in the pilot episode. I believe that it is no coincidence the writers chose a polar bear to be a prominent island mystery; they have made the fans happy by explaining that DHARMA introduced these animals to the island... and in doing so have cleverly avoided fans wondering "WHY" polar bears are on a tropical island.
The second clue came in the form of Desmond's button pushing partner in the swan station. Kelvin Joe Inman. Is it coincidence that 'Kelvin' is a measurement which deals with sub zero temperatures.
Another clue came when Desmond arrived back to the island in 'Live Together, Die Alone' and claimed that the island is inescapable... "a bloody snowglobe". Snowglobe???? Also, in this very episode, the closing scenes showed a search team for the island based somewhere in an antarctic environment.
Little else appeared in the show until the writers confirmed a deal with ABC to end the show and finally reveal all of its secrets in the remaining 3 seasons. We know the writers like to set up reveals way before their time... and what do we get in the first episode of Season 4, a mass of clues hinting toward a connection with the north and south poles.
First we see Hurley drawing a picture in the future while in the mental institution... an antarctic setting containing an eskimo and an igloo. Also, throughout the episode there are multiple references to HO HO. Hurley is standing next to the Ho Ho's when he sees a vision of Charlie, the letters H and O are on the walls of the institution and Jack and Hurley play HORSE... only to get to the letters H and O. The writers have cleverly given this double meaning as many fans have just associated HO with their corresponding numbers; the famous 8 and 15. BUT WHAT ELSE IS ASSOCIATED WITH HO HO HO... Santa Clause and the north pole anyone???
And in last week's episode, "The Shape Of Things To Come", Ben appears at one of these openings in a winter Parka steaming in the warm sun, indicating having just been in a sub zero environment moments before. Maybe the much alluded to Orchid Station which is rumoured to be some sort of teleportation device is based at one of the main openings of hollow earth; the poles.
Wouldn't it also be a nice added puzzle piece that the strange magnetic properties of the island at hollow earth are constituting toward the well known and beautiful northern lights or aurora borealis, created by magnetic energy which emit at the north and south poles... could this energy be coming from the island!? It has also been proven that the world would end if it weren't for this magnetic energy protecting it from solar winds... maybe the work being conducted by DHARMA in the swan hatch controlling the magnetic forces IS connected to the wellbeing of the world!! The clues go on and on......
I believe that one of this season's big finale reveals will be that the Oceanic 6 who escape the island will leave the tropical climate and find themselves soon voyaging frozen climates in order to leave hollow earth through one of its openings at the poles. Would explain why after the island Hurley is thinking of a frozen environment.
Finally, what have we heard the writers of the show nicknaming their secret twist this season; "The FROZEN Donkey Wheel..."
Phew, finally got there. Hope you have enjoyed this theory and I would appreciate any responses. I understand that some of this has been explored before, particularly hollow earth, but I havent seen it come together in this way to explain alot of things in the show.
