As we all know way back in season 2 in the episode Dave. Ben (or in season 2 henry but we will call him by his real name.) told Locke that he never entered the numbers and he never pushed the button. Ben is manipulating people ALL THE TIME. We may not know it, but even when we think he isn't he is.
So the big question is why would Ben tell Locke that. He obviously did push the button because the hatch din't implode at that time. The reason Ben told Locke that he didn't push the button is because he knew that Locke would lose faith and in the future he wouldn't push the button therefore causing an electromagnetic anomaly to occur. And when that happened our friends down in "Cold Land" discovered the island and had somewhat of an idea where to find it. So they figured they had better call thier boss, Penny. The one person other than Widmore that is desperate to find the island. And Penny will do whatever she can to find the island and find Desmond.
And then there is Ben. Manipulating the whole thing. He manipulated Locke so he wouldn't push the button. And he knew that Penny would be looking for the island and when the electromagnetic anomaly to occured she got one step closer. And Ben got one step closer to killing Penny.
But that happens in the future. Alex isn't even dead yet in Season 2. So why would Ben be after Penny already? Simple. Ben has flashes just like Desmond does. Ben knew Widmore was going to kill his daughter and already started his plan to kill Penny before Alex even died. Ben has obviously traveled on and off the island so it would make sense that he has had flashes before. But if not flashes then could he possibly have even time travled. Maybe through the Orchid station. It sure looked strange seeing Ben in the dessert in a Parka, a wound and cold steam coming off of his body. Ben's manipulation starts with his flash and then he manipulates based off what he has seen. Ben having flashes is stretched, but why else would he have manipulated Locke not to push the button way back in season 2. Don’t forget Ben obviously turned on the black light to show Locke the map to the Pearl where he would loose even more of his faith. In the end we are all manipulated by Ben in one way o! r another so what’s to say he hasn’t manipulated everyone into believing that he has seen the future.
