In the distant future, after we've shed our vestigial pinkie toe, a corporation develops time travel technology. This company sets up an outpost located on an island some time prior to the Greek classical period (If it's the island of Atlantis, the date is supposedly 9500 B.C.)
Wealthy future four-toed humans pay to use the island time machine, like the hub of a giant Farris wheel. The spokes of which spatially lead only to particular vile vortex locations, but temporally, to a multiplicity of times. The four toed humans adorn the hub with a four toed statue.
At some point, time tourism is abandoned, likely due to some kind of incident. [According to legend, the Atlantians tried to invade Athens, perhaps this alludes to the fact that the four-toe tourists began to interfere with the past. Also, allegedly Atlantis "sank" in one day]
The island was "scuttled" or unmoored in time and space. Not a soul can find it. It is manned with a skeleton crew to protect it in case of accidental discovery. I suspect Jacob is one of these original caretakers. Future humans like Mrs. Hawking and Brother Campbell were hired to police the timeline and keep the future separate from the past. They cannot find the island.
The island was lost for centuries until it was accidentally found by the Black Rock. As another poster has suggested, Charles Widmore and Alvar Hanso were on the Black Rock.
Widmore figured out how to use some of the technology of the island and would like to use it for profit. Hanso wanted to use it to accelerate human development and "progress". Hanso's DHARMA group, although well-intentioned, wrested power away from the original caretakers like Jacob and Richard Alpert.
