After the recent finale for Lost's fourth season, things are clear like they were this time last year...... the narrative layout of the show is going to change yet again next year...
Last season we were introduced to the flash-forward which changed the narrative of Season 4 - with the present being on the island, and the story catching up with what we were seeing in the future with the use of flash-forwards.
Now that we are essentially caught up... one would assume there is only the option to have the present narrative being off-island with the Oceanic 6 as the island has apparently disappeared in time...
However, I believe the show could go down a different road. I believe that the present narrative being set on the island is the basis for the whole show.... can you imagine watching LOST with only the stories of six of our characters off-island trying to get back??
So wouldn't it be interesting to imagine that when the island disappeared it was sent through time into the future... somewhere around 2009 (which would be our present time as viewers) just in time for the Oceanic 6 to regroup, find it and hop back on.
But that would mean the survivors on the island.... including The Others and their new leader Locke would have not experienced anything... and it would seem that the Oceanic 6 had just left.....? Yes it would!!! Which is where it gets interesting........
What if when the island disappeared in the finale... it was sent to a different time (either long ago, or far in the future). There the islanders were lost in time.... and made new lives for themselves over many years... with Locke carrying out his duties as The Others' leader. However, something went wrong, and as Jack confirmed in the finale "bad things happened after the Oceanic 6 left the island". What these things are is merely assumption... more attacks from Widmore's people??? But what if during this time of darkness on the island, the leader Locke, just like Ben had done before him, decides to take the drastic measure of moving the island again to avoid the threats.
And what happens when someone moves the island.....? They are spit out into the world - just like Ben was spit out into the Sahara Desert, as we saw in The Shape Of Things To Come, which was clearly set after the events at the frozen wheel. So that would explain how Locke leaves the island and assumes the alias of Jeremy Banthem and tries to correct the past and return the Oceanic 6 to the island.
And where does the island move... this second time around... to 2009!!!! Just in time for the Oceanic 6 to regroup and hop back on. However, this island won't be anything like the island they had left only a few years prior. It will be an island that has been ravaged by darkness over many years.
And this leads to the narrative of Season 5. What if in the premier we open to see the Oceanic 6 arrive back to the island, causing the present narrative to be the usual on-island (as the island is the most important character of the show). We also get Oceanic 6 flashBACKS!! which will show events from where we are caught up to (Ben and Jack at the coffin) up to how they get back to the island, catching us up with present time on-island. Meanwhile, we get flashBACKS of the survivors who were stuck on the island and we are shown what life has been like with Locke as leader, as well as the dark events which have taken place since the Oceanic 6 left.
I believe this method of story telling will be the only way to keep the island story as the present narrative and allow the involvement of every character. Because we know Season 5 is about getting back to the island.... but if we don't have the island until the end of the season, we won't be seeing our favourite characters as well as island mysteries such as DHARMA and Jacob until the end of the season and season 6.
Just to recap I think that the present narrative will be ON-ISLAND 2009 with the Oceanic 6 FLASHBACKS of how they returned to the island (from 2007-09) and on-island characters FLASHBACKS of their life over the how many years since the island has been bouncing around in time.
Just to include the other option which could work.... we could be seeing the Oceanic 6 working off island to get back at the same time as the stories of the survivors on the island. However, both will be in their own time frames. Off-island story in 2007 and on-island story in whenever it was sent in the finale. So theoretically the flash device could be scrapped altogether.
However, I hope my first theory is true as this would add a lot more intrigue and mystery, just like the questions we have been asking this season - of trying to link the present story with the future events and asking how they got there.... Thanks for reading, feel free to post your thoughts....
